M2T recordings often contain an audio stream inside an MPEG-2 transport stream, while many music players and audio applications accept OGG directly. Converting the file extracts that audio and encodes it as Ogg Vorbis or Ogg Opus for smaller storage, editing, or software compatibility.

What the M2T format is

M2T is an MPEG-2 transport stream file, commonly produced by HDV camcorders, broadcast capture equipment, and television recording software. Although it normally contains video, it can also carry MPEG audio, AAC, AC-3, or other audio streams.

An M2T file is therefore usually not an audio-only source. A converter must select an audio stream and discard the video before creating an OGG file. Files may contain multiple language tracks, commentary tracks, or channel layouts.

What the OGG format is

OGG is a container format commonly used with Ogg Vorbis audio and, less commonly, Ogg Opus audio. Vorbis provides lossy compression with broad support in desktop players, Linux applications, and many audio tools; Opus generally provides better quality at low bitrates but is not supported by every older player.

Choose OGG when the destination program supports Vorbis or Opus, when you need a smaller audio file, or when you want to separate sound from a camera or broadcast recording. OGG is not a lossless format when it contains Vorbis or Opus.

How to convert M2T to OGG

FFmpeg is the most reliable desktop method because it can inspect transport streams, select a particular audio track, and omit the video stream.

  1. Install FFmpeg from your operating system’s package manager or the official FFmpeg distribution.
  2. Inspect the streams with ffprobe input.m2t. Look for entries marked Audio and note their stream indexes, codecs, channel count, and sample rate.
  3. Extract the first audio stream and encode it as Ogg Vorbis:
    ffmpeg -i input.m2t -map 0:a:0 -vn -c:a libvorbis -q:a 5 output.ogg
  4. Open output.ogg in a player or editor and check its duration, channel configuration, and synchronization with the original recording.

The -map 0:a:0 option selects the first audio stream, -vn removes video, and -q:a 5 uses FFmpeg’s quality-based Vorbis setting. Use -map 0:a:1 for the second audio stream, or replace the stream selector after checking ffprobe.

For an Ogg Opus file, use:

ffmpeg -i input.m2t -map 0:a:0 -vn -c:a libopus -b:a 128k output.ogg

Use a higher bitrate such as 192k for music or complex stereo material. Some older applications accept Ogg Vorbis but reject Ogg Opus, so Vorbis is the safer compatibility choice.

If you prefer a graphical application, VLC can open many M2T files and use Media → Convert/Save → Add → Convert/Save, then an OGG audio profile. FFmpeg is preferable when the source has multiple audio tracks or VLC selects the wrong stream.

You can also use the free converter on 101convert.com without installing software. Upload the M2T file, choose OGG as the output, start the conversion, and download the resulting audio file.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

Converting an M2T file that already contains AAC, AC-3, or another lossy codec to Vorbis or Opus performs a second lossy encode. Choose a moderate or high quality setting and keep the original M2T as the archive master.

Do not use -c:a copy when creating OGG: that copies the source codec without converting it and may produce an invalid or unsupported OGG file. If FFmpeg reports that no audio stream exists, the M2T contains video only or uses a stream that the installed FFmpeg build cannot decode.

Transport streams can contain damaged packets or timestamp discontinuities. FFmpeg may print decoding warnings; listen through the output and compare its duration with the source. For a multichannel source, Vorbis or Opus may preserve the channel layout only if the target player supports it; downmix explicitly with -ac 2 when stereo compatibility is required.
