XMI files commonly contain game music in an extended MIDI form, while many modern players and applications require encoded audio. Converting XMI to OGG renders the MIDI events through a synthesizer and stores the result as a compact, shareable audio file.

What the XMI format is

In the Audio category, XMI usually means Extended MIDI, a MIDI-based format developed for computer games and associated with Miles Sound System tools. An XMI file stores musical events such as notes, instruments, tempo changes, and sometimes playback or loop information; it normally does not contain a complete waveform recording.

You may encounter XMI files in extracted assets from DOS and early Windows games, game-development archives, and legacy MIDI conversion tools. Programs that create or package this form include Miles Sound System pipelines and utilities that convert MIDI sequences into XMI for interactive playback.

What the OGG format is

OGG is a container most commonly used with the Vorbis lossy audio codec. It is suitable for music files, games, media players, and web distribution because Vorbis provides smaller files than uncompressed WAV while retaining adjustable stereo, sample-rate, and quality settings.

OGG is an audio recording of playback, not a MIDI sequence. It therefore works in software that cannot interpret XMI, but it no longer allows independent editing of notes, instruments, tempo events, or MIDI channels.

How to actually convert XMI to OGG

Using the online converter

  1. Open the XMI-to-OGG converter on 101convert.com; no software installation is required.
  2. Upload the .xmi file and select OGG as the output format.
  3. Start the conversion, then download the generated .ogg file when processing finishes.

This method is appropriate when the XMI reader and synthesizer supplied by the converter produce an acceptable rendition. For repeatable sound selection or control over looping, use a desktop workflow.

Using a MIDI renderer and FFmpeg

  1. Open the XMI file in an XMI-capable desktop converter such as Awave Studio, then use File → Save As or the equivalent export command to create music.mid. A dedicated XMI-to-MIDI utility can be used instead.
  2. Install TiMidity++ and configure a General MIDI SoundFont. The SoundFont determines the actual instrument samples used when the event data is rendered.
  3. Render the MIDI file to PCM WAV with TiMidity++:
timidity music.mid -Ow -o music.wav
  1. Encode the rendered WAV as OGG Vorbis with FFmpeg:
ffmpeg -i music.wav -c:a libvorbis -q:a 5 music.ogg

Use a different -q:a value to change Vorbis quality; higher values produce larger files. Delete the intermediate WAV only after checking the OGG output.

Quality and compatibility limits

The conversion is a two-stage process: XMI events are first synthesized into audio, then that audio is compressed. The selected SoundFont can change the instruments, balance, reverb, and overall character substantially, so two conversions of the same XMI can sound different.

XMI files may contain multiple sequences, embedded loop instructions, or game-specific timing behavior. Check which sequence the converter exports and set an explicit render duration or loop count when available; standard OGG playback usually produces a finite recording and does not reproduce interactive game looping automatically.

Keep the original XMI if later editing is required. OGG cannot restore the note events or instrument assignments once they have been rendered, and Vorbis compression adds generation loss if the file is repeatedly re-encoded.
