What the MK3D format is

MK3D is a Matroska-based container for stereoscopic 3D video, commonly using the .mk3d extension. It can contain video, multiple audio tracks, subtitles, chapters, and metadata. MKVToolNix and mkvmerge can create or remux MK3D files, and the format also appears in 3D disc-ripping and media-archiving workflows.

What the OGG format is

OGG is a multimedia container most often used with Vorbis or Opus audio. It supports compressed audio at smaller file sizes than uncompressed formats and is accepted by many desktop players, open-source applications, and web tools. OGG is useful when you need an audio-only file rather than the original 3D video container.

How to convert MK3D to OGG

The conversion must extract an audio stream from the MK3D file and encode it as OGG. FFmpeg is the most controllable desktop option.

1. Install FFmpeg and confirm that the MK3D file contains an audio stream with ffmpeg -i input.mk3d.
2. Convert the first audio stream to OGG Vorbis with:
   ffmpeg -i input.mk3d -map 0:a:0 -c:a libvorbis -q:a 5 output.ogg
3. Replace 0:a:0 with 0:a:1 or another stream index if the required language or commentary track is not the first audio stream.

The -q:a 5 setting provides variable-bitrate Vorbis encoding at a moderate-to-high quality. For an Opus-based OGG file, use ffmpeg -i input.mk3d -map 0:a:0 -c:a libopus -b:a 128k output.ogg.

Quality and compatibility limitations

This is a lossy conversion when the source audio is encoded as AAC, AC-3, DTS, or another compressed format: decoding it and encoding Vorbis or Opus can reduce quality. Use a higher quality setting such as -q:a 7 for Vorbis when file size is less important. If the MK3D file has no audio stream, it cannot produce a useful OGG file. Subtitles, chapters, 3D video, and video metadata are not preserved.

If the source audio is already Vorbis in an OGG-compatible Matroska track, stream copying may avoid re-encoding with ffmpeg -i input.mk3d -map 0:a:0 -c:a copy output.ogg, but this works only when the codec and container combination are accepted by FFmpeg and the target player.
