What the NBS format is

NBS is the native song format used by Minecraft Note Block Studio and compatible programs such as Open Note Block Studio. It stores note-block instruments, pitches, durations, layers, tempo, and song metadata. You commonly encounter .nbs files in Minecraft music projects, note-block song archives, and custom map resources.

An NBS file is not normally playable by general audio software because it does not contain a conventional PCM or compressed audio stream.

What the OGG format is

OGG usually contains Vorbis audio, a lossy format suited to music, games, websites, and applications that need smaller files than WAV. It supports metadata, offers adjustable bitrate or quality settings, and is widely supported by desktop media players and game engines, although some phones and editing programs have better support for MP3, WAV, or Opus.

How to convert NBS to OGG

1. Open the NBS-to-OGG converter on 101convert.com.
2. Upload the .nbs file and select OGG as the output format.
3. Start the conversion, then download the generated .ogg file when processing finishes.

This method requires no installed software. The resulting sound depends on the converter's NBS playback engine and instrument set.

Using desktop tools

1. Open the file in Note Block Studio or Open Note Block Studio.
2. Use File → Export → MIDI or the equivalent MIDI export command to create song.mid.
3. Render the MIDI through a synthesizer such as MuseScore or TiMidity++ and save an intermediate WAV file, for example song.wav.
4. Encode the rendered audio with FFmpeg:

In FFmpeg, -q:a 5 provides a medium-high Vorbis quality setting. Use values from 0 to 10 to trade file size against quality; higher values generally produce larger files.

Quality and compatibility limitations

NBS does not include a standard recording of each note-block instrument. MIDI export therefore relies on the soundfont or synthesizer used during rendering, so the OGG may not sound exactly like playback in Minecraft. Check tempo, octave, instrument assignment, and song length after rendering.

If the target application does not support OGG Vorbis, encode the rendered WAV as MP3 or use OGG with the application's documented codec requirements. Keep the WAV until the result has been checked, because converting the OGG back to WAV cannot restore discarded audio data.
