What the OGG format is

OGG is a multimedia container commonly carrying Vorbis or Opus compressed audio. Games, music players, streaming applications, Audacity, VLC, and FFmpeg frequently create or open OGG files. An OGG file stores a waveform, not individual musical notes, instruments, pitches, or note-block timing.

What the NBS format is

NBS is the Note Block Studio song format used to represent Minecraft note-block compositions. It stores note positions, pitches, instruments, timing, song metadata, and other sequencing information rather than recorded sound.

NBS is useful for editing and sharing note-block songs in applications such as Open Note Block Studio. Its advantage is editable, game-oriented note data; it is not suitable for preserving the exact sound, vocals, effects, or detailed instrumentation of an OGG recording.

How to actually convert OGG to NBS

A faithful one-step conversion does not exist because the formats contain different kinds of data. Use audio-to-MIDI transcription, then import the MIDI sequence into an NBS editor.

1. Decode the OGG to an analysis-friendly WAV file with FFmpeg:

2. Run an audio-to-MIDI transcription tool such as Spotify Basic Pitch on input.wav. Its command-line form is typically:
   basic-pitch midi-output input.wav
   This produces a MIDI file containing detected pitches and timings.
3. Open the resulting MIDI file in Open Note Block Studio using File → Import MIDI. Review the imported tracks, assign instruments, and adjust tempo, note range, and timing.
4. Save the composition with File → Save As and select the .nbs format.

Converting the OGG to WAV first does not improve the source recording; it only gives the transcription software uncompressed input. Keep the original OGG for archival playback and treat the NBS file as a recreated arrangement rather than an equivalent copy.
