Convert MIDI to NBS

Minecraft Note Block Studio requires an .nbs song file, so a MIDI performance must be converted before it can be opened and arranged as Minecraft note-block music. The conversion is also useful when sharing or editing a note-block arrangement rather than the original synthesizer instructions.

What the MIDI format is

MIDI is a sequence of musical instructions, not recorded audio. A .mid or .midi file can contain note pitches, timing, duration, velocity, channels, instrument program changes, tempo events, sustain-pedal data, and multiple tracks; the playback device or software supplies the actual sounds.

Digital audio workstations such as FL Studio, Ableton Live, Logic Pro, Cubase, and Reaper export MIDI. Notation software, hardware keyboards, sequencers, and game-music tools also use it. MIDI can describe more instruments, timing detail, controllers, and simultaneous parts than a Minecraft note-block arrangement can reproduce.

What the NBS format is

NBS is the native song format associated with Minecraft Note Block Studio. An .nbs file stores a note-block arrangement as timed notes and layers, including Minecraft instrument assignments, pitch, tempo, and song metadata. It stores arrangement data rather than recorded sound.

NBS is suited to inspecting and editing individual layers, changing note-block instruments, and opening a song in compatible Note Block Studio or Minecraft note-block tools. It is specialized: an NBS file is not a general-purpose MIDI replacement and cannot be expected to play correctly in a MIDI sequencer.

How to convert a MIDI file to NBS

1. Install the current release of Open Note Block Studio from its official project repository or release page. It is the practical desktop option for importing MIDI and saving NBS without rendering the song to audio. Older Windows releases of Note Block Studio may also work, but their menu layout and NBS-version support vary.
2. Open the program and choose the MIDI import command, commonly shown as File → Import MIDI or a similar menu item. Select a file such as song.mid. Menu names differ between releases, so use the application’s current command rather than assuming an exact path.
3. Review the import settings. Preserve the source tempo when possible, and set quantization or tick resolution carefully if available. Excessive quantization can remove short notes or alter swing and syncopation.
4. Inspect every imported track and layer. Map MIDI instruments to suitable Minecraft note-block instruments, remove controller or percussion data that imported incorrectly, and correct notes outside the usable note-block pitch range.
5. Save through File → Save As or the equivalent export command and select NBS if more than one format is offered. Use a filename such as song.nbs, then reopen it and verify the notes, tempo, layers, and metadata before sharing it.

There is no consistently supported, reputable general-purpose online service that converts arbitrary MIDI files directly to valid NBS. Many web converters output audio, MusicXML, or another MIDI file instead. For a private or large file, desktop conversion also avoids upload limits and keeps the source local; use an online service only when it explicitly lists NBS export and identifies the NBS version it produces.

Quality and compatibility limits

This is an arrangement conversion, not a bit-for-bit translation. MIDI velocity does not directly control Minecraft note-block loudness, MIDI program numbers require remapping, and sustain pedals, modulation, pitch bends, and other continuous controllers are generally discarded.

NBS uses a discrete timing grid, so fast ornamentation, unusual tuplets, swing, tempo maps, and overlapping notes can be rounded, simplified, or shifted. Notes outside the target note-block range may be transposed, omitted, or require manual correction. Dense MIDI files can also produce more simultaneous layers than the editor or intended Minecraft playback setup handles well.

Before importing, simplify the source MIDI by removing unused tracks, checking tempo changes, separating percussion from pitched instruments, and exporting a clean Standard MIDI File. Test the resulting .nbs file in the same Note Block Studio or Minecraft tool that will open it, because applications differ in supported NBS revisions and instrument behavior.
