Free online OGG to M4R converter

iPhone ringtone import through Finder, Apple Devices, or iTunes uses .m4r files, while game audio, Linux software, and web downloads often use .ogg. Converting the audio to AAC in an M4R container makes it suitable for the iPhone tone library.

What OGG files contain

OGG usually refers to the Ogg open multimedia container developed by Xiph.Org. It most commonly contains Vorbis audio, but can also contain Opus, FLAC, or Speex; the .ogg extension alone does not identify the codec.

Ogg Vorbis and Opus are common in games, open-source applications, Linux distributions, streaming tools, and audio editors such as Audacity. Most current media tools can decode common Ogg audio files, including FFmpeg, VLC, and Audacity.

What M4R files are

M4R is Apple’s ringtone filename extension for an MPEG-4 audio file. A typical M4R file contains AAC audio, the same efficient lossy codec commonly used in M4A files, but the .m4r extension identifies it as a ringtone for Apple import workflows.

M4R is useful because iPhone tone syncing recognizes it directly. Keep a custom ringtone to 30 seconds or less; this is compatible with the current GarageBand ringtone workflow and avoids length-related import or assignment problems.

Convert the file

Use the converter on 101convert.com to convert an OGG file for free without installing software: upload the .ogg file, select M4R as the output format, start the conversion, then download the resulting .m4r file. Trim the source before conversion if the selected sound exceeds 30 seconds.

For local conversion and precise trimming, FFmpeg can create an AAC M4R file directly:

ffmpeg -i input.ogg -c:a aac -b:a 128k ringtone.m4r

To take a 30-second section starting 10 seconds into the source, use:

ffmpeg -i input.ogg -ss 00:00:10 -t 30 -c:a aac -b:a 128k ringtone.m4r

Replace input.ogg and ringtone.m4r with your filenames. A bitrate of 128–192 kb/s AAC is generally sufficient for a ringtone; use mono for spoken audio if a smaller file is useful.

Audacity is another desktop option. Import the OGG file, select and delete unwanted audio, then use File → Export Audio and choose M4A/AAC when available. Audacity may require the optional FFmpeg library for AAC export. Rename the exported .m4a file to .m4r only after confirming that it was actually exported as AAC in an MPEG-4 container.

Import and compatibility checks

Connect the iPhone, then drag the finished M4R file to the iPhone in Finder on macOS or in Apple Devices or iTunes on Windows. After syncing, select it under Settings → Sounds & Haptics → Ringtone on the iPhone.

Do not change an OGG filename from .ogg to .m4r without converting it. Renaming changes neither the Ogg container nor its Vorbis or Opus audio, so Apple ringtone import will reject it. Re-encoding Vorbis or Opus to AAC also creates a second lossy generation; a higher AAC bitrate cannot restore detail removed from the original OGG file.
