iPhones use .m4r files for custom ringtones, so an audio clip in .m4a must be trimmed and saved in the ringtone format before it can be imported. The clip can be converted on 101convert.com without installing software, or processed locally when privacy, codec control, or batch conversion matters.

What the M4A format is

M4A is an audio-only MPEG-4 container used by Apple Music, iTunes, QuickTime, GarageBand, Audacity, phones, voice recorders, and other media software. The extension does not specify one codec: M4A files commonly contain lossy AAC audio, but they can also contain lossless ALAC or less common formats.

AAC-encoded M4A can usually be copied into an M4R container without another generation of quality loss. ALAC, PCM, and other codecs generally need to be re-encoded as AAC for reliable iPhone ringtone compatibility. Files protected with DRM, including some Apple Music downloads, cannot be converted normally; use an unprotected audio file that you are authorized to modify.

What the M4R format is

M4R is an MPEG-4 audio file identified by the .m4r extension and used primarily for custom iPhone ringtones. It normally contains AAC audio, so changing the extension alone does not convert an incompatible codec or create a ringtone from a full-length song.

Its practical advantage is recognition by Apple ringtone workflows rather than improved sound. Keep a custom ringtone at 30 seconds or less for dependable iPhone import. M4R does not improve the source recording and cannot restore detail lost through an earlier lossy encode.

How to convert the file

Using 101convert.com

1. Open the M4A-to-M4R converter on 101convert.com.
2. Upload the source M4A file and choose M4R as the output format.
3. If trimming options are available, select the ringtone segment and limit it to 30 seconds or less.
4. Start the conversion and download the resulting .m4r file.

Online conversion requires uploading the recording, so do not use it for private material unless the service and your permissions allow that transfer.

Using FFmpeg locally

FFmpeg provides precise trimming and codec control. For an M4A that already contains AAC audio, copy the audio stream without re-encoding:

For ALAC, PCM, or another codec, encode the audio as AAC:

ffmpeg -i input.m4a -t 30 -map 0:a:0 -c:a aac -b:a 256k output.m4r

Replace the filenames with the actual paths. The -t 30 option limits the output to 30 seconds; use a shorter value when the clip contains silence at either end. Stream copying preserves AAC quality, while AAC encoding introduces one additional lossy generation.

Using an audio editor

1. Open the M4A in an installed editor such as Audacity.
2. Delete unwanted audio and keep the selection at 30 seconds or less.
3. Choose File → Export Audio and export AAC audio in an MPEG-4 container, commonly shown as M4A. An AAC-capable FFmpeg component may be required.
4. Rename the exported file from .m4a to .m4r only after confirming that it contains AAC audio. If the editor can export directly to M4R, use that option instead.

Renaming is safe only when the underlying MPEG-4/AAC structure is already suitable; it is not a substitute for re-encoding.

Importing the ringtone to an iPhone

On current macOS versions, connect the iPhone, open Finder, select the device under Locations, and drag the .m4r file onto the device window or its tones area when displayed. On Windows, the Apple Devices app is the current device-management tool; depending on its version, drag or add the file in the device's tones section and apply the sync. Older Windows installations and older macOS releases use iTunes, where the file is added under Tones and then synced.

After synchronization, choose the ringtone on the iPhone under Settings → Sounds & Haptics → Ringtone.

Quality and compatibility checks

Use AAC-LC audio at 44.1 or 48 kHz, in mono or stereo. A 128–256 kbps bitrate is generally sufficient for a short ringtone; increasing it cannot recover quality absent from the source. Check the waveform for clipping and reduce excessive gain before export.

If Apple rejects the file, verify that it contains AAC rather than ALAC or PCM, is no longer than 30 seconds, has exactly one extension such as ringtone.m4r, and is not DRM-protected. A hidden-extension setting can create an invalid name such as ringtone.m4r.m4a.
