Some legacy Sony players, SonicStage libraries, and ATRAC-compatible applications require AA3 instead of the M4A files produced by phones and media software. Converting is also useful when an older Sony archive must be preserved in its original ATRAC3-oriented format.

What the M4A format is

M4A is an audio-only MPEG-4 container commonly created by Apple Music, iTunes, iPhones, Android recording apps, and audio-editing software. It usually contains AAC audio, although it can also contain lossless ALAC audio. AAC M4A files are lossy; ALAC files preserve the source signal but generally use more storage.

The .m4a extension identifies the container, not one mandatory codec. Check the codec before conversion if the source is an ALAC recording or contains metadata that must be retained.

What the AA3 format is

AA3 is a Sony ATRAC3 audio file associated with SonicStage and older Sony hardware. ATRAC3 is a lossy codec designed for portable music players, MiniDisc-related software, and Sony media libraries; common encoding rates include 66, 105, and 132 kbps.

AA3 is a legacy format. Some Sony software stores comparable ATRAC3 material in .oma OpenMG Audio files instead, and protected SonicStage content may remain inside the application's library rather than as a freely usable standalone file. The exact extension produced depends on the Sony application and version.

How to actually convert M4A to AA3

The built-in converter on 101convert.com can convert the file online for free without installing software. Upload the .m4a file, choose AA3 as the output format, start the conversion, and download the resulting file. Test the download in the intended Sony application or device because support for standalone AA3 and OpenMG-protected files varies.

For a local workflow, use Sony software that still includes an ATRAC3 encoder, such as a compatible SonicStage installation or an older Sound Forge release:

  1. Decode the M4A to an uncompressed WAV intermediate with FFmpeg:

ffmpeg -i input.m4a -vn -c:a pcm_s16le output.wav

  1. Import output.wav into the Sony application using its import command, such as File → Import.
  2. Choose ATRAC3 as the output or transfer codec and select the required bitrate. Use 132 kbps when compatibility and quality are more important than capacity; use 66 or 105 kbps only when the target device requires them or storage is restricted.
  3. Export or transfer the result. If the program creates .oma rather than .aa3, renaming the extension will not convert the container and may make the file unusable.

FFmpeg can decode most M4A files and encode ATRAC3 in builds that include the encoder, but it does not consistently produce the Sony-specific AA3/OpenMG container expected by legacy software. A direct command such as ffmpeg -i input.m4a -c:a atrac3 -b:a 132k output.aa3 may create a file with the wrong container or fail; use it only when the receiving application accepts raw ATRAC3 in that form.

Quality and compatibility limitations

Conversion from AAC or ALAC to ATRAC3 is not lossless. When the M4A already contains AAC, the audio is decoded and compressed again, so use the highest bitrate supported by the target rather than trying to improve quality with a later setting. Converting ALAC to AA3 discards its lossless quality.

AA3 files may omit M4A metadata, album artwork, chapters, replay-gain data, and gapless-playback information. Verify the artist, album, title, and track order after conversion.

DRM-protected M4A files cannot normally be converted by third-party tools unless the source application provides an authorized export. AA3 or OMA files protected by OpenMG may likewise play only through the registered Sony software or device that created them.
