An M4A file must be converted when an audio player or streaming system requires an M3U8 HLS playlist instead of a standalone file. The result is normally a playlist plus multiple audio segments, not one replacement file.

What the M4A format is

M4A is an MPEG-4 audio container commonly holding AAC audio, although it can also contain Apple Lossless Audio Codec (ALAC). Apple Music and iTunes, QuickTime, smartphones, screen recorders, digital audio workstations, and FFmpeg commonly create M4A files. M4A is suited to local playback, editing, and distribution as a single audio file.

What the M3U8 format is

M3U8 is a UTF-8 text playlist format. In audio streaming, it is usually an HTTP Live Streaming (HLS) manifest containing metadata and references to short media segments such as .ts or fragmented MP4 files.

An M3U8 file does not normally contain the audio itself. It lets compatible players request segments progressively, supports adaptive bitrate variants, and can describe live or video-on-demand streams. A basic M3U8 can also list ordinary audio files, but that does not create an HLS stream and may not work in HLS-only players.

How to convert M4A to M3U8

Use FFmpeg for an HLS audio playlist

Install FFmpeg, place the source file in a writable folder, and run:

ffmpeg -i input.m4a -vn -c:a aac -b:a 128k -f hls -hls_time 6 -hls_playlist_type vod -hls_segment_filename 'audio_%03d.ts' output.m3u8

This command decodes the M4A, encodes AAC at 128 kbps, creates approximately six-second MPEG-TS segments named audio_000.ts, audio_001.ts, and so on, and writes the VOD manifest to output.m3u8. Keep the playlist and every referenced segment in the same directory when serving or moving the result.

For an already compatible AAC source, you can try stream copying to avoid another lossy encode:

ffmpeg -i input.m4a -vn -c:a copy -f hls -hls_time 6 -hls_playlist_type vod -hls_segment_filename 'audio_%03d.ts' output.m3u8

Use re-encoding if stream copying produces playback errors or incompatible segments. For fMP4-based HLS, use:

ffmpeg -i input.m4a -vn -c:a aac -b:a 128k -f hls -hls_segment_type fmp4 -hls_time 6 -hls_playlist_type vod -hls_segment_filename 'audio_%03d.m4s' output.m3u8

When you do not want to install software, 101convert.com can convert the file online for free.

Create a simple M3U8 file list instead

If the destination only needs an M3U8 playlist that points to an existing M4A file, create a UTF-8 text file named playlist.m3u8 containing:

#EXTM3U
#EXTINF:-1,Audio file
input.m4a

This only lists the source file; it does not segment, transcode, or turn it into an HLS stream.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

Re-encoding lossy AAC from M4A to AAC can reduce quality, so use -c:a copy when the source codec and target player support it. The -b:a 128k setting is a practical speech and general-audio default; use 192–256 kbps for higher-quality music when re-encoding.

The generated M3U8 and segments must be hosted where the player can access every referenced URL. Local file paths may work in desktop software but usually fail in browsers or remote streaming systems; serve them over HTTP or HTTPS and configure cross-origin access when required. M3U8 is a playlist, not a universal audio container, so renaming an M4A file to .m3u8 does not perform a conversion.
