Free online AAC to M3U8 converter

A streaming player, IPTV application, or HLS-compatible device may require an M3U8 playlist instead of a single AAC file. The conversion creates a playlist and media segments; it does not turn AAC into a different audio codec.

What the AAC format is

AAC (Advanced Audio Coding) is a lossy audio codec designed to provide better quality than MP3 at similar bitrates. It is used by Apple Music, iTunes, smartphones, video editors, broadcast systems, and media encoders. AAC commonly appears inside an .m4a or .mp4 container, while an elementary AAC stream usually uses the .aac extension and ADTS framing.

Programs such as FFmpeg, VLC-based tools, Audacity with suitable export support, and media or video recording applications can create AAC files. A file ending in .aac contains audio data, not a playlist or streaming manifest.

What the M3U8 format is

M3U8 is the UTF-8 form of an M3U playlist. In HLS (HTTP Live Streaming), an M3U8 file is a text manifest containing metadata and references to short audio or video segments. It normally includes tags such as #EXTM3U, #EXT-X-TARGETDURATION, #EXTINF, and #EXT-X-ENDLIST.

An M3U8 file does not contain the complete audio stream by itself. A valid HLS output consists of the playlist plus the referenced media segments, commonly MPEG-TS files with .ts extensions or fragmented MP4 files with .m4s extensions. This structure allows players to request segments independently, support network streaming, and update live playlists.

How to convert AAC to M3U8

Using FFmpeg

FFmpeg is the most direct desktop method because it can segment the AAC stream and generate the HLS manifest in one operation. Place the input file in a working folder, create an output directory, and run:

This preserves the existing AAC bitstream and creates a video-on-demand playlist named playlist.m3u8 with six-second MPEG-TS segments. The result is the complete hls folder, not only the M3U8 file. Keep the relative paths unchanged when moving or publishing the playlist.

If the source uses an AAC profile or sampling rate that the target player does not support, transcode it during segmentation:

The same commands can read an AAC track in an M4A container; replace input.aac with the actual filename. On Windows, run the command in PowerShell or Command Prompt after installing FFmpeg and adding it to the system path.

Creating only a playlist

If a player merely needs a playlist pointing to an existing AAC file, an M3U8 text file can reference that file, but this is not equivalent to HLS segmentation. A minimal static playlist is:

Replace the duration with the actual length in seconds. Use FFmpeg-generated HLS output when the destination explicitly requires HLS, segmented playback, encryption, adaptive streaming, or standard HLS tags.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

Using -c:a copy avoids another lossy AAC encode, so audio quality remains unchanged. The M3U8 extension itself does not compress audio or reduce file size; it only describes how the segments are arranged.

Transcoding with -c:a aac introduces a new lossy generation but can improve compatibility with players that reject the source AAC profile, channel layout, or sample rate. MPEG-TS segments are broadly compatible with HLS players, while raw AAC files listed directly in an M3U8 are less consistently supported.

Distribute every segment referenced by the playlist. Renaming, separating, or deleting a segment causes playback errors even though the M3U8 file remains readable. For live streaming, omit -hls_playlist_type vod and configure a continuously updated input or capture process; a finished AAC file produces a static VOD playlist.
