Free online TEXT to M3U8 converter

A media player, smart TV, or streaming workflow may require an .m3u8 playlist instead of a plain .txt file. The conversion is useful when a text list already contains media URLs or file paths that need playlist structure for playback or sharing.

What the TEXT format is

A .txt file contains plain characters with no required structure. Notepad, TextEdit, VS Code, and word processors that support plain-text saving can create it. Media applications may export URLs, local paths, stream addresses, or filenames as one item per line without playlist metadata.

An arbitrary TXT file cannot become a useful M3U8 by changing its extension. It must contain playable media locations, normally one local path or HTTP(S) URL per line. Titles, headings, explanatory text, and other non-playable lines must be removed or converted into valid playlist metadata.

What the M3U8 format is

M3U8 is a UTF-8-encoded M3U playlist. It is used by audio and video players to locate media files, and by HTTP Live Streaming (HLS) clients to read manifests that reference media segments or variant playlists.

A basic file starts with #EXTM3U and can list paths or URLs directly:

Optional #EXTINF lines provide a duration and display title:

M3U8 does not compress or re-encode media. Its advantage is a widely supported, UTF-8 playlist format that can store local files, remote URLs, stream entries, titles, and HLS-specific metadata in a text file.

How to convert TEXT to M3U8

1. Open the TXT file in a plain-text editor and check every line. Keep only valid media URLs or paths, and confirm that local files exist.
2. For a direct conversion, use the converter on 101convert.com, upload the TXT file, choose M3U8 as the output, and start the conversion.
3. Open the downloaded result in a text editor. Confirm that it uses UTF-8, begins with #EXTM3U, and contains the expected entries. If the converter preserves only the original lines, add the header manually.
4. Test the playlist in the target player. A successful file conversion does not prove that every URL, path, codec, or stream is playable.

How to create the file manually

1. Open the source in Notepad, TextEdit in plain-text mode, VS Code, or another text editor.
2. Put #EXTM3U on the first line.
3. Add one media path or URL per line. Optionally put #EXTINF:-1,Display name immediately before each entry.
4. Save as playlist.m3u8 with UTF-8 encoding. In Windows Notepad, use File → Save as, select UTF-8, and choose All files for the file type so Windows does not append .txt.

A minimal playlist made from two URL lines is:

Compatibility and limitations

The conversion changes playlist text only; it does not download, repair, resize, or improve the referenced audio or video. Playback quality is unchanged.

Relative paths are resolved from the folder containing the M3U8 file, so moving the playlist can break them. Absolute paths are more reliable for a fixed computer. Use paths supported by the target player, with forward slashes such as C:/Media/song.mp3 when Windows backslashes cause compatibility problems.

A remote URL must remain reachable and return supported media. A webpage URL, expired link, authentication-protected address, or URL requiring special request headers may not play even though it is syntactically valid.

A simple M3U8 containing complete media files is not automatically an HLS stream. HLS media manifests require tags such as #EXT-X-TARGETDURATION, #EXTINF for segments, and usually #EXT-X-ENDLIST; master manifests use tags such as #EXT-X-STREAM-INF. Generate these manifests with an HLS encoder or packager when segment-based streaming is required rather than adding them to an ordinary file list.
