Legacy Sony music players and SonicStage libraries may require Sony ATRAC audio instead of AAC. Converting is also useful when an archive or playback application accepts .aa3 but cannot read modern AAC files.

What the AAC format is

AAC (Advanced Audio Coding) is a lossy audio codec used in MPEG-4 audio files, commonly with the .aac, .m4a, or .mp4 extension. Apple Music and iTunes, Android devices, streaming services, cameras, and video editors create or store AAC audio. AAC usually provides better quality than MP3 at the same bitrate, but older Sony ATRAC hardware and SonicStage installations may not support it directly.

What the AA3 format is

.aa3 is a Sony ATRAC audio file, generally containing ATRAC3 audio for SonicStage-era software and portable Sony players. It was designed for efficient storage on older devices and can be associated with Sony’s OpenMG/SonicStage ecosystem. Some Sony files use DRM or proprietary container handling, so an AA3 file produced by a generic encoder may not work on every device that historically accepted ATRAC.

How to convert AAC to AA3

Using the online converter

  1. Open the AAC-to-AA3 converter on 101convert.com; the service can be used without installing desktop software.
  2. Choose the source file with an .aac, .m4a, or compatible MPEG-4 extension.
  3. Set the output format to AA3 and start the conversion.
  4. Download the resulting file and test it in the intended Sony software or player.

If the source is an .m4a file, confirm that it contains AAC rather than Apple Lossless (ALAC); changing the extension does not convert the codec.

Using Sony software

For hardware that requires Sony’s ATRAC or OpenMG implementation, use a compatible SonicStage release when available. Import the AAC only if that installation accepts AAC, then choose Transfer, Convert, or the ATRAC encoding option provided by the software. SonicStage versions differ in supported input formats and may require an intermediate WAV file; if so, decode the AAC to WAV first, import the WAV, and select ATRAC3 output. The resulting file may be stored with a Sony-specific extension or container rather than a freely interchangeable .aa3.

Quality and compatibility limitations

AAC-to-AA3 conversion is a lossy-to-lossy transcode: the AAC is decoded and re-encoded, so it cannot restore information already discarded by AAC. Use the highest available ATRAC bitrate that the target device supports, and keep the original AAC for archival use.

FFmpeg can decode many AAC files, but standard builds generally do not provide an ATRAC3 encoder or create Sony OpenMG-protected AA3 files. It is therefore useful for producing an intermediate WAV, for example ffmpeg -i input.m4a output.wav, but not normally for generating a hardware-compatible AA3 file. DRM-protected Sony files may also require the original SonicStage account, library, or device authorization and cannot be recreated by simply changing the extension.
