A Sony ATRAC-compatible player or legacy music library may require AA3 instead of standard PCM WAV. Converting the file changes it from a large, usually uncompressed recording into Sony ATRAC3 audio that those applications can recognize.

What the WAV format is

WAV is a container commonly used for uncompressed PCM audio. It stores samples at settings such as 44.1 kHz and 16-bit resolution without the quality loss associated with lossy codecs, but the resulting files are large.

Windows audio recorders, DAWs such as Audacity and Adobe Audition, audio interfaces, CD-ripping programs, and many video editors create or export WAV files. WAV is commonly used for recording, editing, mastering, sound effects, and archival copies.

What the AA3 format is

AA3 is a Sony ATRAC3 audio file associated with SonicStage and other older Sony music software and devices. ATRAC3 uses lossy compression, so it produces much smaller files than uncompressed WAV while reducing audio data through perceptual encoding.

You would use AA3 when a legacy Sony ATRAC player, SonicStage library, or compatible hardware specifically expects that format. AA3 should not be confused with Audible's unrelated .aa audiobook format. Some Sony software instead stores ATRAC3 in an .oma container, so a program that accepts ATRAC3 may not accept an AA3 filename directly.

How to actually convert WAV to AA3

  1. Open the WAV conversion page on 101convert.com.
  2. Select the source file, such as recording.wav.
  3. Choose AA3 as the output format.
  4. Start the conversion and download the resulting file, for example recording.aa3.
  5. Test the file in the intended Sony application or device before deleting the original WAV.

This route requires no installed audio encoder. For older Sony libraries, SonicStage or OpenMG-compatible desktop software may be necessary after conversion; those programs can import WAV and encode ATRAC3, but commonly create protected or unprotected .oma files rather than a standalone .aa3.

Quality and compatibility limitations

AA3 encoding is lossy. Keep the WAV as the master, because converting an already compressed source to ATRAC3 can introduce additional artifacts. Select the highest bitrate available when preserving music quality matters; lower bitrates reduce storage requirements but make cymbals, ambience, and complex transients more vulnerable to audible degradation.

AA3 support is uncommon in current media players. Sony software may impose OpenMG restrictions, device-transfer rules, or DRM on files created inside its library. A protected AA3 or OMA file cannot be freely converted without authorized playback or export support. Verify the output extension and container with the target device, because renaming an OMA file to .aa3 does not convert its format.
