Wav to kmp file conversion

WAV files can sometimes be used to create Korg Trinity/Triton keymap files (.kmp), but this is not a direct audio-to-audio conversion. A .kmp file is a sampler keymap that stores how samples are mapped across keys and velocity ranges, while the actual audio is usually stored in separate sample files.

Important: a .wav file contains audio data, while a .kmp file contains mapping information. You cannot convert one to the other by renaming the file. Instead, conversion software must build a sampler structure around the WAV sample.

In many Korg workflows, a keymap is used together with related sample files such as .ksf. Depending on the instrument and software, you may also need associated program or bank data for the sample to load and play correctly.

Tools such as Awave Studio and Chicken Systems Translator have historically supported importing WAV files and exporting Korg sampler formats, including KMP in some workflows. However, support varies by version and by the exact Korg model, so compatibility should be verified before starting.

When using conversion software, look for options such as File → Import or File → Export, then choose the appropriate Korg sampler format. If direct KMP export is not available, you may need to create a sampler project first, assign the WAV sample to a key range, and then export the keymap and sample files separately.

Note: Korg Trinity and Triton formats are not the same as generic audio formats, and not every sampler utility supports them equally. If your goal is to use the sample on a specific Korg instrument, confirm whether it expects only .kmp files or a full set of related files.
