Convert WAV to DWP

A .dwp file is needed when WAV samples must be loaded as a DirectWave instrument in FL Studio or the DirectWave plugin. The process creates a sampler program with note mapping and playback settings; it does not encode WAV audio into a new general-purpose audio format.

WAV and DWP formats

WAV is a RIFF audio container most commonly used for uncompressed PCM recordings. Audio editors, DAWs, field recorders, and sample libraries use WAV because it can retain the original sample rate, bit depth, channels, and, in some files, metadata.

A WAV file normally contains audio only. It does not define how samples should be assigned across a MIDI keyboard, split by velocity, looped, or shaped by a sampler envelope.

DWP is the native DirectWave program format from Image-Line. A DWP program stores DirectWave instrument data, including sample-zone assignments, root keys, keyboard and velocity ranges, tuning, loop settings, envelopes, filters, and other available program settings.

DWP is useful for preserving a playable sampled instrument instead of manually rebuilding its mapping each time. It is primarily compatible with DirectWave and is not a format for media players, ordinary audio editors, hardware samplers, or most other DAWs.

Creating a DWP program from WAV samples

Use the DirectWave plugin in FL Studio, or a licensed DirectWave installation. Generic audio converters and online conversion sites cannot create a meaningful DWP because they cannot configure DirectWave sample zones and sampler parameters.

1. Open DirectWave as an instrument channel in FL Studio.
2. Drag a WAV file onto DirectWave's zone or waveform area. DirectWave creates a zone containing that sample.
3. Set the sample's root key and its lowest and highest MIDI notes. For example, assign piano_C4.wav a root key of C4 before extending its key range.
4. For a multisampled instrument, import every recorded note and map each sample to its intended keyboard range. Add velocity ranges only when recordings were made at different playing strengths.
5. Set looping only for sounds that need to sustain beyond the recorded audio. Adjust loop points and the amplitude envelope to prevent clicks and abrupt endings.
6. Use DirectWave's Save program command and save the instrument with the .dwp extension, such as piano.dwp.
7. Close and reopen the program, then test notes across the keyboard and at different velocities.

A complete-song WAV can also be loaded into DirectWave, but the result is a one-shot or looped sampler program triggered from MIDI notes. It does not become an audio file that other players can open as DWP.

Quality and compatibility limits

Saving a DWP does not improve WAV quality or reduce the sample's storage requirements like MP3 or AAC compression. The source WAV's sample rate, bit depth, and channel count still determine audio quality and memory use.

Keep the original WAV files in the same project folder unless the DirectWave save option explicitly embeds or copies them into the saved program. A DWP that references external samples can fail to load correctly after its samples are renamed, moved, or deleted.

Before transferring an instrument, copy the DWP and its sample folder together, then open the copy on the destination system. For use outside DirectWave, retain the WAV files and create the sampler format required by the target software, such as SFZ, Kontakt, or an EXS24-compatible format.
