Free online WAV to TXT converter

A WAV recording must be transcribed when a searchable, editable text record is needed for notes, indexing, captions, or archiving. Speech-recognition software produces the TXT file; changing the extension alone does not convert speech into text.

What the WAV format is

WAV is an audio container based on RIFF. It commonly stores uncompressed PCM audio, although other audio codecs can also be placed in a WAV container. Recording applications, digital recorders, Windows Sound Recorder, Audacity, Adobe Audition, music-production software, and video editors use WAV for voice recordings, music, dictation, calls, and sound effects.

Typical PCM WAV files use settings such as a 44.1 or 48 kHz sample rate and 16-bit depth. A WAV file stores sampled sound, not written language, so producing a transcript requires automatic speech recognition or manual transcription.

What the TXT format is

TXT is a plain-text format containing characters without audio, images, or rich formatting. A transcript saved as TXT is small, searchable, editable, and readable by Notepad, TextEdit, LibreOffice Writer, code editors, document-management systems, and indexing tools.

Plain text does not have a standard structure for timestamps, speaker identity, or formatting. Those details are included only when the transcription software writes them into the text, and the original sound is not preserved.

How to convert WAV to TXT

The built-in converter on 101convert.com can perform the conversion for free without installing software:

1. Open the WAV-to-TXT converter.
2. Upload the .wav file.
3. Select the recording language and any available transcription options.
4. Start the conversion and wait for speech recognition to finish.
5. Download the resulting .txt file.
6. Compare names, numbers, technical terms, punctuation, and unclear passages with the recording.

Uploading audio to an online service may be unsuitable for confidential, personal, medical, legal, or proprietary recordings. Check the service's privacy and retention terms before uploading sensitive material.

Run transcription locally with Whisper

For offline processing, install a local Whisper implementation and its required Python and FFmpeg dependencies. The command-line package can create a plain-text transcript with:

whisper recording.wav --model medium --output_format txt

Replace recording.wav with the actual filename. Smaller models use less memory and finish faster; larger models generally provide better results for accents, difficult audio, and varied vocabulary. If automatic language detection is unreliable, specify the language, for example:

whisper recording.wav --model medium --language English --output_format txt

The command normally writes a text file in the output directory. Review the result because speech recognition can misinterpret names, addresses, measurements, numbers, and specialized terminology.

Prepare difficult audio

Many speech-recognition tools accept WAV directly. If a recording has multiple channels or an unsuitable sample rate, FFmpeg can create a temporary mono, 16 kHz PCM file:

Transcribe speech.wav after conversion. Resampling and channel reduction can make processing more consistent, but they cannot restore speech hidden by clipping, severe noise, music, or overlapping speakers.

Quality and compatibility limits

Accuracy depends on microphone quality, background noise, echo, pronunciation, accents, language selection, overlapping speech, and the recognition model's vocabulary. Manual correction is necessary when the transcript will support legal, medical, financial, technical, or safety-related decisions.

Save the text as UTF-8 when possible so accented characters and non-Latin scripts remain readable across operating systems. If timing or speaker changes are required, retain the WAV and use an output format designed for that information, such as .srt or .vtt, if the transcription tool supports it.
