What the WAV format is

WAV, usually using uncompressed PCM audio, stores samples with a fixed sample rate, bit depth, channel count, and duration. Windows Sound Recorder, Audacity, DAWs such as Reaper and Ableton Live, audio editors, recorders, and many game or video tools create WAV files. It is commonly used when editing or archiving source-quality recordings because it preserves the recorded waveform without lossy compression.

What the NBS format is

NBS is the Note Block Studio song format. It stores timed notes, note-block instruments, layers, tempo, and song metadata rather than recorded sound. Minecraft note-block players and tools that support Note Block Studio files use NBS for playable arrangements.

NBS files are compact and editable: individual notes can be moved, removed, retuned, or assigned to different instruments. They do not preserve vocals, natural reverberation, expressive timing, or the full timbre of the WAV. The result is an arrangement of Minecraft-style notes, not an audio copy.

How to convert WAV to NBS

The reliable workflow is WAV → MIDI → NBS.

1. Trim the WAV to the musical passage you need. Remove silence and background noise, and use a mono file containing one clearly audible melody when possible.
2. Transcribe the recording to MIDI with an audio-to-MIDI tool. Basic Pitch is a suitable local option. Install it with python -m pip install basic-pitch, then run basic-pitch midi-output input.wav. The command creates a MIDI file in the selected output directory.
3. Open the resulting MIDI in Note Block Studio or Open Note Block Studio using File → Import MIDI. Choose the MIDI tracks to import and set the song tempo if the detected tempo is wrong.
4. Inspect the imported notes in the piano-roll or song editor. Delete transcription errors, reduce excessive simultaneous notes, select Minecraft instruments, and move notes outside the usable note-block range by octaving or transposing them.
5. Save the arrangement with File → Save as and select the .nbs filename extension. Test the file in the intended NBS player or Minecraft note-block tool.

Quality and compatibility limitations

Audio-to-MIDI transcription works best with a clean, monophonic melody. MIDI transcription cannot reliably infer the original instrument or every performance nuance.

NBS has a limited pitch and instrument model compared with ordinary audio. Notes outside the target player's supported range must be transposed, and dense chords may exceed practical note-block arrangements. Different Note Block Studio versions and Minecraft playback tools can interpret instruments, tempo, looping, and file-version features differently, so verify the exported file with the software that will play it.
