It does not contain recorded audio; instead, it tells a MIDI-capable instrument or software what to play. MID files are widely used by musicians, arrangers, game audio creators, and anyone working with sequencers, notation software, or virtual instruments.

Target format

NBS is the file format used by Note Block Studio, a music editor for creating songs that can be played inside Minecraft using note blocks. NBS files store note placement, instruments, tempo, layers, and song metadata in a format optimized for that application. The main advantage of NBS is that it is designed specifically for Minecraft-style note block arrangements, making it easy to edit, preview, and export songs for in-game use.

How to perform the conversion

The most reliable desktop option for converting MID to NBS is Open Note Block Studio (often shortened to OpenNBS), because it supports MIDI import and saving as .nbs. In some versions, the menu path may differ slightly, but the workflow is the same: import the MIDI file, review the mapping, then save the result as NBS.

1. Install and open Open Note Block Studio.
2. Choose File → Import → MIDI or the MIDI import option available in your version.
3. Select your .mid file.
4. Review the import settings, such as tempo, instrument mapping, octave range, and whether to split tracks into separate layers.
5. Import the file and inspect the result in the editor.
6. Manually adjust notes, instruments, and timing if needed, since MIDI data often needs cleanup to fit Minecraft note block limits.
7. Save the project as .nbs using File → Save or File → Save As.

If you prefer a web-based option, use a reputable MIDI-to-NBS converter only if it clearly states that it exports .nbs files compatible with Note Block Studio. Online tools can be convenient for quick jobs, but they may offer fewer controls and less accurate track mapping than desktop software. Always reopen the exported file in Open Note Block Studio to verify the arrangement.

Compatibility notes

MIDI and NBS are not directly equivalent, so conversion is often approximate rather than perfect. MIDI can contain many tracks, percussion channels, sustain pedal data, pitch bends, and expressive controller messages that do not map cleanly to Minecraft note blocks. During conversion, some notes may be transposed, merged, dropped, or reassigned to fit the limited instrument set and pitch range available in NBS.

For best results, use a MIDI file with a clear melody, limited polyphony, and simple instrumentation. Complex orchestral arrangements, heavy percussion, and expressive synth parts usually require manual editing after import. Also note that different versions of Open Note Block Studio may handle MIDI import slightly differently, so always test the output before using it in a final Minecraft build.
