What the MP3 format is

During encoding, MP3 removes audio information that the codec estimates will be less audible. The resulting file cannot reproduce the exact signal in the original WAV, even if it is later converted back to WAV.

Current Audacity releases generally include the required MP3 encoder; older installations may ask you to locate or install the LAME encoder.

Quality and compatibility limits

For music, 192–256 kbps is commonly suitable, while 320 kbps produces a larger file with less compression. Speech can often use 64–128 kbps, depending on voice clarity, background noise, and the playback device. Variable bitrate can provide better quality per megabyte than a fixed bitrate, but some very old hardware may support only constant bitrate MP3.

Convert from the original WAV rather than from an existing MP3. Converting MP3 to WAV only expands the file; it does not restore discarded detail. Keep the WAV as the editing or archival copy and use MP3 as the delivery copy. Repeatedly exporting an MP3 through an audio editor applies lossy compression again and can increase artifacts.

Check the result on the intended device. Older players may impose limits on bitrate, sample rate, mono or stereo output, filename characters, folder structure, or maximum file size.
