What the W64 format is

W64, also called Sony Wave64, is an audio container associated with Sony Sound Forge and professional Windows-based recording systems. MP3 is normally limited to mono or stereo. For a multichannel W64 recording, explicitly create a stereo file with:

Check the resulting channel layout and metadata. Artist, album, track, and date fields are copied only when FFmpeg can read them, and W64 metadata may not map perfectly to MP3 tags.

How to convert W64 with Audacity

1. Install a current version of Audacity and, if its documentation or import dialog requires it, install the compatible FFmpeg library.
2. Open the file with File → Import → Audio. Some Audacity builds may not recognize every W64 variant; use FFmpeg if import fails.
3. Inspect the waveform and remove unwanted silence or sections if needed.
4. Choose File → Export Audio, select MP3, choose a quality or bitrate setting, and save the output with an .mp3 extension.

Audacity is useful when the recording needs trimming, normalization, or other editing before export. For an unedited conversion or multiple files, FFmpeg is faster and more reproducible.
