Convert WAV to ALS

A collaborator who needs to edit a recording in Ableton Live requires an .als Live Set, not a renamed audio file. Importing the WAV into Live creates an editable project, while the WAV remains a separate asset unless collected into the project folder.

What the WAV format is

WAV is an RIFF-based audio container commonly used for uncompressed PCM recordings. Its metadata describes properties such as sample rate, bit depth, channel count, and duration; WAV can also contain other audio codecs, although PCM is the normal production format.

Recording software, audio editors, samplers, operating systems, and DAWs such as Ableton Live, Pro Tools, Logic Pro, Cubase, and Audacity use WAV for studio recordings, stems, archival masters, and imported clips.

What the ALS format is

ALS is Ableton Live’s proprietary Live Set project format. It stores session structure, tracks, clips, devices, automation, tempo, routing, mixer settings, and arrangement data. It is not an audio format and cannot replace the WAV files referenced by the set.

An ALS set is useful when the recipient must continue editing the session in Ableton Live rather than receive only a rendered recording. Live normally references imported audio at its original location, so sending only the .als file can produce missing-sample errors.

How to create an ALS set from WAV

Ableton Live is the appropriate desktop application because ALS is a Live-specific project format.

1. Open Ableton Live and create a set with File → New Live Set.
2. Drag recording.wav from Live’s Browser or your file manager onto an audio track in Session View or Arrangement View.
3. Adjust the clip start and end points, warp mode, tempo relationship, fades, track effects, and arrangement as required. These edits change how Live plays the source; they do not convert the WAV into another audio codec.
4. Save the set with File → Save Live Set As. Save it inside a project folder; Live creates or uses the .als Live Set file.
5. Choose File → Collect All and Save before transferring the project. Enable the options that copy referenced samples into the project folder, then send the complete project folder containing the ALS file and its media.

For multiple WAV files, place each file on its intended audio track or in the required arrangement before saving. If the recipient needs a finished recording rather than an editable session, use File → Export Audio/Video to render WAV, AIFF, or another supported delivery format; that operation does not create an ALS file.

Online audio converters such as CloudConvert, Zamzar, or Convertio can change audio formats, but they do not reliably create Ableton Live projects with tracks, clips, devices, automation, and valid sample references. No general online converter is an appropriate substitute for Ableton Live, particularly for confidential recordings.

Quality and compatibility

Saving a Live Set normally does not re-encode the imported WAV, so its original sample data remains available. Playback can nevertheless differ if Live applies warping, fades, pitch changes, sample-rate conversion, or effects. Freeze, flatten, or export the result when the recipient needs rendered audio rather than editable processing.

Keep the ALS file and its collected project folder together. Collect All and Save copies referenced samples into the project but does not turn them into data embedded inside the ALS file.

Live versions affect compatibility: a newer release can generally open older sets, while an older release may not open a set saved by a newer release. Third-party plug-ins may also be unavailable on the recipient’s system; freeze or flatten affected tracks, or provide rendered stems. ALS files are intended for Ableton Live and cannot be opened by ordinary media players.
