What the AA3 format is

AA3 is a Sony ATRAC audio file extension associated with ATRAC3 and ATRAC3plus compression. Sony SonicStage and OpenMG Jukebox created or managed these files for Sony Network Walkman devices, Sony Connect music downloads, and other legacy Sony audio workflows.

AA3 files are typically lossy-compressed, so they use less storage than uncompressed WAV files but have already discarded some audio information. Some files use Sony OpenMG copyright protection; those files may be playable only through authorized Sony software and cannot be converted by ordinary decoders.

What the WAV format is

WAV is an audio container most commonly holding uncompressed linear PCM data. It is supported by Windows, macOS, Linux, DAWs, waveform editors, media players, video editors, and many hardware devices.

WAV is suitable when an application requires standard PCM audio, when you need sample-level editing, or when you want to avoid adding another lossy compression step. The resulting file is much larger than AA3: a stereo 16-bit, 44.1 kHz WAV uses approximately 10 MB per minute.

How to actually convert AA3 to WAV

Using the 101convert online converter

1. Open the AA3-to-WAV converter on 101convert.com.
2. Choose the AA3 file from your computer or device.
3. Set the output format to WAV, if the format selector is shown.
4. Start the conversion and download the resulting WAV file when processing finishes.

This option does not require software installation. Do not upload confidential recordings, and expect conversion to fail if the AA3 file is encrypted or protected by Sony OpenMG.

Using FFmpeg on a desktop

FFmpeg can decode ATRAC3 when the installed build includes the required decoder and when the AA3 container is supported. Place the source file in a working folder, open a terminal there, and run:

ffmpeg -i input.aa3 -c:a pcm_s16le output.wav

The command writes 16-bit PCM WAV while preserving the source sample rate and channel layout when possible. To inspect the source before converting, run:

ffprobe input.aa3

If FFmpeg reports an unknown format, an unsupported codec, or encrypted content, try a current FFmpeg build and verify that the file plays in the authorized Sony application that created it. Renaming .aa3 to .wav does not convert the audio.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

Conversion from AA3 to PCM WAV does not restore detail lost during ATRAC encoding. The WAV is easier to edit and distribute, but it cannot have better source quality than the AA3 file.

Keep the original AA3 file after conversion because WAV does not preserve Sony-specific DRM metadata, album-management data, or the smaller compressed representation. If the source is protected, use only playback and export functions provided by the licensed Sony software; a converter cannot legitimately remove that protection.

For ordinary editing, 16-bit PCM at the original sample rate is sufficient. Do not increase the sample rate or bit depth unless a particular production workflow requires it, because upsampling creates a larger file without recovering lost information.
