Programs such as digital audio workstations, samplers, and some editing applications may require WAV instead of an OGM-based audio track. Converting extracts the audio stream and decodes it into a standard PCM WAV file for editing, playback, or archival use.

What the OGM format is

OGM, or Ogg Media, is an Ogg-based container historically used for video files with Vorbis audio, subtitles, and multiple streams. Audio-only OGM files can contain an Ogg Vorbis stream, while many files with the .ogm extension also contain video.

OGM was common in older encoding and DVD-ripping workflows and may have been created by OGM-specific muxing tools, older versions of FFmpeg, or media applications based on MPlayer and related codecs. Modern players often open OGM files, but current audio editors and hardware frequently do not accept the container directly.

What the WAV format is

WAV is a Microsoft RIFF audio container most commonly used for uncompressed linear PCM. It is supported by nearly all operating systems, audio editors, DAWs, samplers, and recording hardware.

WAV preserves the decoded samples without adding another lossy compression stage, which makes it suitable for waveform editing, effects processing, CD-quality exports, and production workflows. The trade-off is size: a stereo 16-bit WAV at 44,100 Hz uses about 10 MB per minute, before container overhead.

How to convert OGM to WAV

Using FFmpeg

FFmpeg is the most direct desktop method because it can read the OGM container, select an audio stream, and write PCM WAV.

  1. Install FFmpeg from your operating system’s package manager or an official FFmpeg distribution.
  2. Open a terminal in the folder containing the source file.
  3. Run ffmpeg -i input.ogm -map 0:a:0 -c:a pcm_s16le output.wav.

The option -map 0:a:0 selects the first audio stream and avoids accidentally converting embedded video. pcm_s16le creates a broadly compatible 16-bit PCM WAV.

To inspect streams before converting, run ffprobe input.ogm. If the file contains several language or commentary tracks, change the stream index in -map 0:a:0, such as -map 0:a:1. To retain the source sample rate while choosing 24-bit PCM, use -c:a pcm_s24le; to set a particular rate, add an option such as -ar 48000.

Using the online converter

You can convert the file for free on 101convert.com without installing software: open the OGM-to-WAV converter, upload the .ogm file, select WAV if prompted, start the conversion, and download the resulting file. For files containing multiple audio tracks, a desktop tool such as FFmpeg gives more control over stream selection.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

If the OGM audio is Vorbis or another lossy codec, conversion to WAV decodes the existing audio; it does not restore information removed during the original compression. Exporting at a higher sample rate or bit depth cannot improve the source quality.

Some OGM files contain no audio stream, only video or subtitles. FFmpeg will report that condition instead of producing a meaningful WAV. A file with several audio streams requires explicit selection because the first stream may not be the desired language or mix.

Use 16-bit PCM for maximum compatibility. Use 24-bit PCM when the WAV will continue through a recording or mixing workflow, but expect a larger file. Very long WAV files can exceed the traditional 4 GB RIFF limit; split the output or use an RF64-capable workflow when that limit applies.
