DVR-MS recordings often need conversion when an audio editor, podcasting application, DAW, or portable player cannot open Microsoft's recording container. Extracting the soundtrack to WAV preserves uncompressed PCM audio for editing, archiving, or further encoding.

What the DVR-MS format is

DVR-MS is Microsoft's Digital Video Recording container, created primarily by Windows Media Center for recorded television. It stores the program's video, audio, metadata, and sometimes broadcast copy-protection information in an ASF-based file. You may encounter it on older Windows Media Center PCs and in recordings transferred from Windows XP Media Center Edition or Windows Vista systems. Windows Media Center later used the WTV container instead.

What the WAV format is

WAV is a container commonly used for uncompressed PCM audio. It is supported by most audio editors, DAWs, media players, and archival tools, and it avoids another lossy compression step during editing. A WAV file is substantially larger than the original compressed soundtrack; common television audio settings such as 48 kHz, 16-bit stereo require about 10.1 MB per minute.

How to actually convert DVR-MS to WAV

Using FFmpeg

FFmpeg is the most controllable desktop option. Install a current FFmpeg build, open a terminal in the folder containing the recording, and inspect its streams:

ffprobe "recording.dvr-ms"

Extract the first audio stream as 16-bit PCM WAV:

ffmpeg -i "recording.dvr-ms" -map 0:a:0 -vn -c:a pcm_s16le "recording.wav"

-map 0:a:0 selects the first audio stream, -vn discards video, and pcm_s16le creates standard signed 16-bit little-endian PCM. To select another audio stream, change the final stream index; for example, -map 0:a:1 selects the second one.

To force a specific delivery format, add the sample rate and channel count. For 48 kHz stereo:

ffmpeg -i "recording.dvr-ms" -map 0:a:0 -vn -c:a pcm_s16le -ar 48000 -ac 2 "recording.wav"

If FFmpeg reports that the file is encrypted or protected, the recording's copy-protection restrictions must be handled by the software and account that created it; changing the file extension or transcoding command will not bypass them.

Using the online converter

You can convert the file on 101convert.com for free without installing software: open the converter, upload the .dvr-ms file, choose WAV as the output, start the conversion, and download the resulting .wav file. Do not upload recordings containing private or restricted material unless the service's handling and retention policies are acceptable.

Quality and compatibility limitations

WAV output is uncompressed, but it cannot improve the source recording. If the DVR-MS soundtrack is already compressed, conversion to PCM only prevents additional loss during later editing. The output sample rate, channel layout, and original codec depend on the recording; use ffprobe when those properties matter.

Some DVR-MS files contain multiple audio streams, such as alternate languages or commentary. FFmpeg's default stream selection may not choose the desired one, so use ffprobe and an explicit -map option. Standard WAV uses a 32-bit size field and is limited to roughly 4 GB; unusually long extractions may require RF64 or segmented output instead.
