Convert MPDP to WAV

A MixPad project must be rendered to WAV when an editor, video application, hardware device, or recipient cannot open the original session. Exporting also creates a single file that is easier to share, archive, or inspect than a project with linked media.

What the MPDP format is

MPDP is NCH MixPad's native project format. It stores the multitrack arrangement, clip positions, fades, effects, automation, mixing settings, and references to imported audio; it is not normally a playable audio file. MPDP files are used by people creating or revising MixPad sessions.

A project can depend on the original recordings and other media files. Keep those files available when opening the project, or use MixPad's project backup or collection function when moving the session to another computer. Missing media, plug-ins, or incompatible MixPad versions can change the export or produce silent sections.

What the WAV format is

WAV is an audio container commonly used for uncompressed PCM data. It is supported by most audio editors, video applications, operating systems, and hardware devices, and is suitable for further editing, mastering, video production, CD-authoring workflows, and archival exports.

PCM WAV avoids an additional lossy-compression stage and can retain the sample rate and bit depth selected for the render. The files are much larger than MP3, AAC, or OGG files, and a normal export is a finished stereo or multichannel mix rather than independently editable tracks.

How to export MPDP as WAV

1. Install and open NCH MixPad, preferably the version that created the project or a compatible newer version.
2. Choose File → Open Project and select the .mpdp file.
3. Relink any missing clips to their original audio files. Do not export until the timeline contains all required media.
4. Check track mutes, solos, volume and pan automation, effects, clip fades, and the start and end positions. MixPad renders the current mix state.
5. Choose File → Export Project as Audio File.
6. Select WAV, choose the destination and a filename such as finished_mix.wav, then set the required sample rate, channel configuration, and bit depth.
7. Start the export and open the resulting file in an audio player or editor. Check its duration, channel count, beginning and ending, and audible content.

MixPad is the practical desktop option because generic converters do not interpret MPDP's project structure or resolve its associated media. Audacity and similar editors can process the exported WAV, but they cannot normally open an MPDP project directly.

Online conversion and compatibility

Services such as CloudConvert and Zamzar may convert the exported WAV to another supported format, but they should not be expected to convert .mpdp directly. Upload only material that is appropriate for a third-party service; confidential, unreleased, or copyrighted recordings may require an offline workflow.

Match the export settings to the destination. Retain the MixPad project's original sample rate for general editing, use the rate required by the video session for video work, and use 44.1 kHz, 16-bit, stereo for standard CD audio. Choose 24-bit WAV when further mixing or mastering is planned, if the destination supports it.

WAV cannot restore detail already discarded by an MP3 or another lossy source. Exporting also applies the project's effects, automation, fades, and balance to the render. If separate editable tracks or stems are required, export the relevant tracks or subgroups individually instead of exporting only the full mix.
