What the IFV format is

.ifv is an ambiguous extension rather than one universally supported format. Some IFV files contain video encoded with Intel Indeo and occur in older games or multimedia applications; others are proprietary recordings produced by surveillance cameras and their desktop players. The creating program or device determines the container, codecs, and whether an audio stream exists.

Because of that variation, a file may open only in its original CCTV viewer, an older media player, or a converter that supports the specific IFV variant. Check the file’s source before selecting conversion settings.

What the WAV format is

WAV is a RIFF-based audio container commonly used for uncompressed PCM. It is accepted by most audio editors, transcription applications, DAWs, operating systems, and archival workflows.

WAV avoids the additional lossy compression used by formats such as MP3, but its files are much larger. Common exported audio uses 16-bit PCM at 44.1 or 48 kHz; the appropriate value depends on the source stream and the target application.

FFmpeg can extract audio when the installed build recognizes the IFV container and its codecs:

-vn discards video, while pcm_s16le creates standard 16-bit little-endian PCM. To inspect the streams before converting, run:

If FFmpeg reports an unknown format or codec, open the file in the manufacturer’s player and use Export, Save as, or Convert if available. If that software can first produce a supported video file, such as .avi or .mp4, extract its audio with the same FFmpeg command.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

• Conversion does not improve the original recording. If the IFV audio is compressed, converting it to WAV only places the decoded result in an uncompressed container.
• An IFV file may contain no audio stream. In that case, an audio converter cannot produce meaningful WAV output.
• Proprietary surveillance files may require authentication, a matching player version, or the original recorder’s export function. Renaming the extension does not convert the data.
• WAV files are approximately large enough to require 10 MB per minute for mono 16-bit 44.1 kHz PCM and 20 MB per minute for stereo at the same settings.
• For confidential surveillance footage, local FFmpeg or the vendor’s software avoids uploading the recording to a web service.
