Free online IFV to M4A converter

IFV files commonly come from CCTV and DVR systems, while phones, media players, and audio editors more readily accept M4A. Converting the file extracts its audio track and stores it as an AAC-based M4A file for playback, sharing, or editing.

What the IFV format is

IFV is an uncommon video filename extension used by some surveillance cameras, DVRs, and proprietary video-recording applications. The extension does not identify one universal codec: an IFV file may contain video and audio in a vendor-specific container, and some files may contain no audio at all.

You usually encounter IFV files after exporting footage from a security recorder or copying recordings from a camera system. The recorder's supplied player may be required to open files that standard media software cannot parse.

What the M4A format is

M4A is an audio-only MPEG-4 container. It commonly stores AAC audio, which provides smaller files than uncompressed WAV while retaining good compatibility with phones, browsers, media players, and audio editors.

M4A is suitable when you need the sound from surveillance footage without retaining the video. It is not suitable for preserving video evidence, timestamps, camera overlays, or the original container metadata.

How to actually convert IFV to M4A

The simplest option is the converter on 101convert.com: open the IFV-to-M4A conversion page, select the .ifv file, choose M4A as the output format, start the conversion, and download the resulting .m4a file. This requires no software installation.

For a local conversion, first try FFmpeg, provided the file uses a codec that FFmpeg supports:

ffmpeg -i input.ifv -vn -c:a aac -b:a 192k output.m4a

The -vn option discards video, -c:a aac encodes the audio as AAC, and -b:a 192k sets the audio bitrate. Use a different input filename if the file contains spaces, for example ffmpeg -i "camera recording.ifv" -vn -c:a aac -b:a 192k recording.m4a.

Check whether FFmpeg can detect an audio stream before converting:

ffprobe input.ifv

If the output lists no audio stream, an M4A file cannot contain sound from that recording. If FFmpeg reports an invalid format or cannot open the file, open the IFV in the recorder manufacturer's player and export it to a standard format such as MP4, AVI, WAV, or AAC first; then convert the exported audio or video with FFmpeg.

Quality and compatibility limits

Converting to AAC cannot restore audio that was absent, muted, encrypted, or damaged in the IFV source. Re-encoding lossy source audio causes another quality loss; use the highest available source quality and a bitrate such as 192k or 256k.

If FFmpeg detects an existing AAC stream, you can avoid re-encoding with ffmpeg -i input.ifv -vn -c:a copy output.m4a. This works only when the source audio is compatible with the M4A container; otherwise use AAC encoding.

Keep the original IFV file when the recording may be needed as evidence. The M4A output normally omits video, camera overlays, timestamps, motion metadata, and other surveillance-system information.
