Phones, music players, and audio editors may not open an FLV recording, while M4A is widely accepted for audio playback and editing. Converting removes the video stream, reducing the file to an audio track that is easier to share, archive, or store.

What the FLV format is

FLV (Flash Video) is a container originally designed for streaming through Adobe Flash Player. Although Flash is obsolete, FLV files remain in legacy website downloads, archived streams, older screen recordings, and files produced by tools such as Adobe Flash Media Encoder, OBS, and FFmpeg. An FLV can contain video and one or more audio streams using codecs such as AAC or MP3.

What the M4A format is

M4A is an MPEG-4 audio container, usually identified by the .m4a extension. It commonly stores AAC audio, which provides good quality at moderate bitrates, and can also store lossless ALAC audio. AAC M4A files work with most current phones, desktop media players, music applications, and audio editors, but support still depends on the codec inside the container.

Using FFmpeg

FFmpeg provides control over stream selection and audio encoding. In a terminal opened in the folder containing the source file, run:

ffmpeg -i input.flv -map 0:a:0 -vn -c:a aac -b:a 192k output.m4a

-map 0:a:0 selects the first audio stream, -vn excludes video, and -c:a aac encodes the result as AAC. The -b:a 192k setting suits general music; 128k can reduce the size of speech recordings, while 256k may suit music when the source contains enough detail to justify it. Replace the input and output filenames as needed.

If the selected FLV audio is already AAC, copy it without another lossy encode:

ffmpeg -i input.flv -map 0:a:0 -vn -c:a copy output.m4a

Stream copying is faster and preserves the existing AAC data, but it may fail or produce limited compatibility when the source codec or parameters are unsuitable for an M4A container. Use the encoding command when the source is MP3 or another incompatible format.

Using VLC

1. Open VLC and select Media → Convert / Save.
2. Choose Add, select the FLV file, and click Convert / Save.
3. Select an audio MP4/AAC profile, often labelled Audio - MP4 (M4A); profile names vary by VLC version.
4. Set a destination filename ending in .m4a, then select Start.

VLC is convenient for a graphical workflow, but FFmpeg is preferable when the FLV contains multiple audio tracks or requires exact codec and bitrate settings.

Quality and compatibility limits

• M4A is audio-only, so all FLV video is discarded. Subtitle tracks, chapters, and unusual metadata may not transfer.
• Re-encoding existing MP3 or AAC audio to AAC causes additional lossy compression. A higher output bitrate cannot restore information already removed; copy a compatible AAC stream when possible.
• For multiple audio tracks, change the FFmpeg mapping, for example -map 0:a:1 for the second track, and verify the output duration and language.
• Check the converted file on the intended device. An .m4a extension alone does not guarantee support for every codec, profile, channel layout, or metadata type.
