DV is a digital video format used mainly by MiniDV camcorders and some professional video equipment. It stores compressed video, usually with relatively high quality for its era, and often includes embedded audio. Because DV is a video format, converting it to M4A usually means extracting the audio track from the video and saving it as an audio-only file.

M4A is an audio container format most often used with AAC or ALAC audio. It is widely supported by Apple devices, many media players, and modern editing tools. Compared with older audio formats, M4A often offers good sound quality at smaller file sizes, especially when encoded with AAC.

How to perform the conversion

The most reliable method is to use FFmpeg, which can extract audio directly from DV files and encode it to M4A.

1. Install FFmpeg on your computer.
2. Open a terminal or command prompt in the folder containing the DV file.
3. Run a command such as ffmpeg -i input.dv -vn -c:a aac -b:a 192k output.m4a.

In this command, -i input.dv selects the source file, -vn disables video output, and -c:a aac tells FFmpeg to encode the audio as AAC inside an M4A container.

If you want to preserve the original audio without re-encoding and the source audio is already compatible, you can try ffmpeg -i input.dv -vn -c:a copy output.m4a. However, this only works when the audio codec and container combination are supported.

Notes on quality and compatibility

Audio quality depends on the source DV recording. If the tape capture is noisy, distorted, or low quality, converting to M4A will not improve it. Re-encoding to AAC may slightly reduce quality, so choose a reasonable bitrate such as 128k to 256k for most speech and music.

Some DV files contain PCM audio, which is excellent for quality but larger in size. In that case, encoding to M4A will reduce file size but may introduce lossy compression if AAC is used.

Compatibility is generally excellent for M4A, but if you need maximum device support, AAC in an M4A container is the safest choice. If your goal is archival preservation rather than smaller size, consider keeping the original DV file as well.
