DVD authoring software and some legacy video workflows require an MPEG-2 elementary video stream instead of a DV recording. Converting DV to M2V also reduces the video bitrate, but the resulting .m2v file contains no audio.
What the DV format is
DV is a digital video format developed for tape-based camcorders and professional video capture. It commonly appears as a raw .dv stream or inside an AVI or MOV file using the DV video codec.
MiniDV, DVCAM, and DVCPRO cameras created DV footage; capture and editing applications such as Adobe Premiere, Final Cut Pro, iMovie, and VirtualDub can also produce DV files. DV is usually standard-definition, intraframe-compressed, and relatively easy to edit because each frame is encoded independently. Its fixed data rate is approximately 25 Mb/s for standard DV, so files are large compared with delivery-oriented MPEG-2 video.
What the M2V format is
M2V is an MPEG-2 video elementary stream, normally stored with the .m2v extension. It contains video only; audio must be stored separately, commonly as WAV, MP2, or AC-3, and muxed later by DVD-authoring or another delivery application.
M2V is useful for DVD authoring, older broadcast workflows, and hardware or software that specifically accepts MPEG-2 elementary streams. MPEG-2 uses interframe compression, so it can produce a much smaller file than DV at an appropriate bitrate, but encoding is lossy and editing is less responsive than editing intraframe DV.
How to convert DV to M2V
FFmpeg is a practical desktop choice for raw DV files and DV-encoded AVI or MOV files. Install FFmpeg, open a terminal in the folder containing the source, and run:
ffmpeg -i input.dv -an -c:v mpeg2video -q:v 2 -f mpeg2video output.m2v
Replace input.dv with the actual filename. For a DV file inside another container, use the same command with its filename, such as tape_capture.avi. The -an option removes audio, -c:v mpeg2video selects MPEG-2 video, and -f mpeg2video forces an elementary MPEG-2 output stream. The quality scale used by -q:v is lower-is-better; 2 prioritizes quality and produces a larger file than higher values.
For DVD-oriented output, set the standard, frame size, frame rate, and bitrate explicitly. A PAL example is:
ffmpeg -i input.dv -an -c:v mpeg2video -pix_fmt yuv420p -s 720x576 -r 25 -b:v 6000k -maxrate 8000k -minrate 2000k -bufsize 1835k -f mpeg2video output.m2v
Use 720x480 and 30000/1001 for NTSC sources instead of the PAL dimensions and rate. Preserve the source’s interlacing when required; DV footage from interlaced cameras should not be deinterlaced unless the target is progressive playback. Inspect the source first with:
ffprobe input.dv
If the audio is needed for later authoring, extract it separately rather than expecting it in the M2V file:
ffmpeg -i input.dv -vn -c:a pcm_s16le audio.wav
You can also convert the file on 101convert.com for free without installing software. Select DV as the input and M2V as the output, then download the generated elementary video stream.
Quality, compatibility, and limitations
DV is commonly 4:1:1 in NTSC regions and 4:2:0 in PAL regions; MPEG-2 DVD video is normally 4:2:0, so chroma detail may be reduced during encoding. Avoid repeated conversion because each lossy MPEG-2 encode can introduce blocking, mosquito noise, and softness.
An M2V file may not play by itself in ordinary media players because it has no audio and no container metadata. DVD authoring software normally pairs it with a separately encoded audio stream and creates the final DVD structure. If the destination accepts a normal video file rather than an elementary stream, an MPEG-2 program stream or a modern H.264 container may be more suitable than M2V.
