Legacy MPEG-1 players, authoring tools, and video-processing applications may require an M1V elementary stream instead of a DV recording. Converting reduces the large DV data rate, but M1V stores video only, so any DV audio must be handled separately.

What the DV format is

DV is a digital video recording format used by MiniDV, DVCAM, and DVCPRO camcorders. Capture applications and editors such as Adobe Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro, and older Windows video tools commonly create .dv files; DV video can also appear inside AVI or QuickTime containers.

DV uses intraframe compression at approximately 25 Mb/s for standard-definition material, which makes frame-accurate editing practical but produces much larger files than MPEG-1. Standard DV commonly uses 720×480 pixels at 29.97 fps for NTSC or 720×576 pixels at 25 fps for PAL, often with interlaced fields.

What the M1V format is

M1V is an MPEG-1 Video elementary stream. It contains compressed video without a container and without an audio track, unlike an MPEG program stream such as .mpg.

M1V is used by legacy MPEG-1 players, video-analysis tools, and some VCD or authoring workflows. It is smaller and more widely supported by older playback hardware than DV, but it uses lossy compression and normally delivers lower quality at a much lower bitrate.

How to actually convert DV to M1V

Using 101convert.com

  1. Open the free video converter on 101convert.com.
  2. Upload the DV file and select M1V as the output format.
  3. Start the conversion and download the resulting .m1v file when processing finishes.

This method requires no installed conversion software. Check the output settings for frame rate, resolution, bitrate, and deinterlacing if the source is interlaced.

Using FFmpeg

FFmpeg can create a genuine MPEG-1 elementary stream from a DV file:

ffmpeg -i input.dv -an -c:v mpeg1video -q:v 2 -f mpeg1video output.m1v

The -an option removes audio because M1V cannot contain it. The mpeg1video encoder selects MPEG-1 video, -q:v 2 requests high quality on FFmpeg’s scale, and -f mpeg1video forces elementary-stream output rather than an MPEG program stream.

For a smaller file, use a bitrate instead of quality-based encoding, for example:

ffmpeg -i input.dv -an -c:v mpeg1video -b:v 1500k -f mpeg1video output.m1v

If the DV footage is interlaced and the destination requires progressive video, deinterlace during encoding:

ffmpeg -i input.dv -vf yadif -an -c:v mpeg1video -q:v 2 -f mpeg1video output.m1v

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

Conversion is lossy: MPEG-1 re-encodes the already compressed DV frames, so fine detail, motion quality, and text clarity may decrease. Keep the original DV file as the editing or archival master.

M1V has no audio channel. If the destination expects synchronized sound, use an MPEG program stream such as .mpg and encode compatible MPEG-1 Layer II audio instead of requesting M1V.

A raw M1V stream may not play correctly in applications that expect a container. Do not simply rename .dv to .m1v; the video must be decoded and re-encoded. VCD-compatible output also requires specific MPEG-1 dimensions, frame rates, bitrate, and audio, so an arbitrary M1V file is not automatically VCD-compliant.
