.m2t file. The conversion changes the container and usually recompresses the video; it cannot restore detail that was not present in the DV source. What the DV format is
DV is a digital video coding format used by MiniDV, DVCAM, and related camcorders. Files commonly contain standard-definition interlaced video at about 25 Mb/s, with 720×576 pixels for PAL or 720×480 pixels for NTSC, plus PCM audio. The .dv extension usually identifies a raw DV stream; DV video can also be stored in .avi or .mov containers.
Camcorder capture utilities, FFmpeg, dvgrab, Adobe Premiere, Final Cut Pro, and older Windows video software can create DV files. You may encounter them after transferring tape recordings from a MiniDV camera or opening an archive made for native DV editing.
What the M2T format is
M2T usually means an MPEG-2 transport stream saved with the .m2t extension. HDV camcorders and older video editors commonly use it for MPEG-2 video with transport-stream multiplexing. It is suitable for workflows that specifically accept HDV-style streams, transport-stream playback, or MPEG-2 authoring.
The extension does not guarantee one exact specification: an M2T file may contain different MPEG-2 resolutions, frame rates, bit rates, and audio formats. HDV-compatible files commonly use MPEG-2 video, 1440×1080 or 1280×720 video, and compressed audio, whereas a generic MPEG-2 transport stream can retain standard-definition dimensions.
How to convert DV to M2T
FFmpeg is the most controllable desktop option. Install it, place the DV file in a working folder, then run:
ffmpeg -i input.dv -c:v mpeg2video -q:v 2 -c:a mp2 -b:a 384k -f mpegts output.m2t
This encodes MPEG-2 video, converts the audio to MP2, and writes an MPEG transport stream. The source frame size and frame rate are retained unless an output filter is supplied. Replace input.dv and output.m2t with the actual filenames.
For a workflow that requires a common HDV-style 1440×1080 stream, use a command matching the source frame rate:
ffmpeg -i input.dv -vf scale=1440:1080:flags=lanczos,setdar=16/9 -c:v mpeg2video -b:v 25M -minrate 25M -maxrate 25M -bufsize 1780k -pix_fmt yuv420p -c:a mp2 -b:a 384k -f mpegts output.m2t
Use -r 25 for a 25 fps PAL workflow or -r 29.97 for a 29.97 fps NTSC workflow only when the receiving application requires an explicit rate and the source matches it. Upscaling standard-definition DV to 1440×1080 changes compatibility and aspect ratio, not detail.
You can also convert the file for free on 101convert.com without installing software. Select the DV file, choose M2T as the output, start the conversion, and download the resulting file when processing finishes.
Quality and compatibility limits
DV is already compressed, and MPEG-2 encoding introduces another generation of lossy compression. Keep the original DV file as the archive master and use the M2T only as a delivery or editing copy.
DV is commonly interlaced. Preserve the field order unless the destination requires deinterlacing; changing it can create combing or motion judder. If the receiving software rejects the result, verify its required resolution, frame rate, audio codec, aspect ratio, and MPEG-2 bit rate rather than relying on the .m2t extension alone.
