What the DV format is

DV is a digital video codec and recording standard used by MiniDV, DVCAM, and DVCPRO cameras. Captured material commonly appears as a raw .dv stream or as DV video inside an AVI or QuickTime .mov file.

Compared with DV, DivX produces much smaller files at the same frame size and frame rate. It is useful for legacy standalone DVD/DivX players, older televisions, media applications, and storage where native DV quality and editing performance are unnecessary.

How to actually convert DV to DIVX

Using FFmpeg

FFmpeg can read raw DV, DV-AVI, and DV-MOV sources and encode MPEG-4 Part 2 video with the DIVX FourCC. Install FFmpeg, open a terminal in the folder containing the source, and run:

Replace input.dv with the actual filename. The command keeps the source dimensions and frame rate, converts the DV audio to MP3, writes a broadly compatible AVI container, and uses a quality-based video setting where lower -q:v values produce larger, better-quality files. Values from 3 to 6 are practical for standard-definition material.

For an interlaced source intended for modern progressive displays, deinterlace during encoding:

Do not deinterlace if the output must retain interlacing for an older television workflow. For a graphical desktop workflow, FFmpeg-based video applications expose the same choices through their import and export panels; select MPEG-4 Part 2 or DivX video, AVI output, MP3 audio, and a 4:3 or 16:9 pixel-aspect setting matching the source.
