A set-top box, DVR, or television may accept recordings only as TRP transport streams, while camera and editing software commonly produce DV files. Converting the file makes it usable on that equipment, but the device may require specific video, audio, resolution, and bitrate settings.

What the DV format is

DV is a digital video recording format designed for MiniDV, DVCAM, and related camcorders. It commonly stores intraframe DV video with PCM audio in an AVI container, a QuickTime container, or a raw .dv stream. Programs such as Adobe Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro, Avid Media Composer, and FFmpeg can import or create DV files.

DV is typically standard-definition, uses relatively high bitrates, and preserves every frame as a separately encoded image. Its video may use 4:1:1 or 4:2:0 chroma sampling depending on the television standard, so conversion to a more widely supported transport stream usually requires both video and audio transcoding.

What the TRP format is

TRP is commonly an MPEG transport stream file used by digital television receivers, set-top boxes, DVRs, and some media players. The stream can contain MPEG-2 or H.264 video and audio such as MPEG audio, AAC, or AC-3; the .trp extension alone does not identify the exact codec profile.

TRP is useful when a playback device expects packetized broadcast-style data rather than a DV editing stream. It can carry program and timing information and tolerate transmission or recording workflows better than some simple media containers, but device compatibility depends on the codecs and stream parameters inside the file.

How to convert DV to TRP

FFmpeg is the most controllable desktop option. Install a current FFmpeg build, open a terminal in the folder containing the source, and inspect the file:

ffprobe input.dv

For broad compatibility with older televisions and receivers, encode MPEG-2 video and MP2 audio inside an MPEG transport stream:

ffmpeg -i input.dv -c:v mpeg2video -pix_fmt yuv420p -b:v 8M -c:a mp2 -b:a 192k -ar 48000 -f mpegts output.trp

Change 8M to match the target device. A higher bitrate retains more detail and produces a larger file; a lower bitrate reduces size but increases blocking. FFmpeg normally retains the source frame size and frame rate. If the source is interlaced, preserve its field structure with suitable MPEG-2 interlaced settings, for example:

ffmpeg -i input.dv -c:v mpeg2video -pix_fmt yuv420p -flags +ilme+ildct -top 1 -b:v 8M -c:a mp2 -b:a 192k -ar 48000 -f mpegts output.trp

Use -top 1 only when the source uses top-field-first ordering; use -top 0 for bottom-field-first material. Confirm the field order with ffprobe or the editing application before encoding.

If the receiving device specifies H.264 rather than MPEG-2, use its documented parameters instead, for example:

ffmpeg -i input.dv -c:v libx264 -preset medium -crf 20 -pix_fmt yuv420p -c:a aac -b:a 192k -f mpegts output.trp

Quality and compatibility limitations

DV is already compressed, so transcoding to MPEG-2 or H.264 cannot improve image quality. The conversion usually reduces file size but introduces another generation of video loss; PCM audio is also commonly recompressed to MP2, AAC, or AC-3.

Test the resulting file on the intended hardware. Some devices require a particular resolution, frame rate, audio codec, transport-stream packet structure, filename convention, or maximum bitrate. Timecode, camera metadata, and editing markers may not survive the conversion, and changing the extension without creating a valid MPEG transport stream will not produce a playable TRP file.
