What the RM format is
RM is the RealMedia container developed by RealNetworks for streaming and storing compressed video and audio. It commonly contains RealVideo and RealAudio streams and uses the.rm extension. You may encounter RM files downloaded from older streaming platforms, created with RealNetworks software, or archived from legacy media systems.
What the TRP format is
TRP is usually an MPEG-2 transport stream with a.trp extension. It is used by some digital video recorders, set-top boxes, televisions, and playback utilities; many devices use TRP for recordings that are technically similar to .ts files.
TRP is a container rather than one fixed video codec. A target device may require MPEG-2 video with MP2 audio, H.264 with AAC audio, or another specific combination. Renaming an RM file to .trp does not convert it and will not change its codecs.
How to actually convert RM to TRP
FFmpeg is the most practical desktop tool because it can decode many RealMedia files and write MPEG transport streams.
- Install a current FFmpeg build and open a terminal in the folder containing the RM file.
- Run this broadly compatible MPEG-2 transport-stream conversion:
ffmpeg -i "input.rm" -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0? -c:v mpeg2video -q:v 2 -c:a mp2 -b:a 192k -f mpegts "output.trp"
The command decodes the first video and audio streams, re-encodes the video as MPEG-2, encodes audio as MP2, and writes an MPEG-TS stream using the TRP extension. Replace input.rm and output.trp with your filenames.
Check the source streams first with ffprobe "input.rm". If the receiving device requires H.264 and AAC instead, use:
ffmpeg -i "input.rm" -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0? -c:v libx264 -preset medium -crf 20 -c:a aac -b:a 192k -f mpegts "output.trp"
You can also convert the file for free on the 101convert.com website without installing software; device-specific codec requirements still apply.
Quality, compatibility, and limitations
Conversion requires decoding and re-encoding when the original RealVideo or RealAudio streams are not accepted by the target device, so it can reduce quality and increase file size. The -q:v 2 setting favors high MPEG-2 quality; use a larger value such as -q:v 4 or -q:v 6 to reduce size.
TRP files may contain multiple programs, subtitles, or metadata, but the example maps only the first video and audio streams. DRM-protected or damaged RM files may not decode. If the device rejects the result, inspect its manual for required resolution, frame rate, codecs, audio sampling rate, and transport-stream profile; changing only the extension cannot satisfy those requirements.
