Programs and DVD-authoring tools may require VOB instead of the older RealMedia container used by an RM video. Converting is also useful when preserving RM footage in a DVD-Video-compatible format or editing it with software that does not decode RealVideo.

What the RM format is

RM (RealMedia) is a multimedia container developed by RealNetworks. Video RM files usually contain RealVideo, often paired with RealAudio, and commonly use the .rm or .rmvb extension.

You may encounter RM files from RealPlayer-era downloads, archived streaming media, older websites, and recordings created with RealNetworks software such as RealProducer. Modern video editors and hardware DVD players often have limited or no native RM support.

What the VOB format is

VOB (Video Object) is the container used for DVD-Video content. A VOB can contain MPEG-2 video, MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 audio, AC-3 audio, subtitles, navigation data, and multiple streams.

VOB is appropriate when the target is a DVD player, DVD-authoring application, or software that expects DVD-Video program streams. A standalone VOB file is not necessarily a complete playable DVD: a disc normally also requires .IFO navigation files, .BUP backups, and a VIDEO_TS directory.

How to actually convert RM to VOB

Using the online converter

You can convert the file for free on 101convert.com without installing software. Upload the RM file, select VOB as the output format, start the conversion, and download the resulting file. The available output settings depend on the converter and the source file.

Using FFmpeg on a computer

FFmpeg is suitable when you need control over the DVD standard, resolution, aspect ratio, and audio codec.

  1. Install a current FFmpeg build and confirm that it recognizes the source with ffmpeg -i input.rm.
  2. For an NTSC DVD-compatible output, run ffmpeg -i input.rm -target ntsc-dvd output.vob.
  3. For a PAL DVD-compatible output, run ffmpeg -i input.rm -target pal-dvd output.vob.
  4. Open output.vob in a player or DVD-authoring program and check the picture, sound, aspect ratio, and synchronization.

If FFmpeg reports an unsupported RealVideo codec, use a build with the required demuxers and decoders, or decode the file with a legacy RealMedia-capable player before transcoding it. Renaming .rm to .vob does not convert the container or its codecs.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

  • Conversion normally requires re-encoding because RealVideo is not a DVD-Video codec. Quality can decrease, and a low-resolution RM source cannot gain detail through conversion.
  • DVD-Video uses fixed video standards: commonly 720×480 at 29.97 fps for NTSC or 720×576 at 25 fps for PAL. Choosing the wrong standard can cause playback, timing, or display problems.
  • Use the source aspect ratio when selecting DVD settings. A 4:3 source should not be converted to 16:9 unless cropping or stretching is intended.
  • A VOB made by a converter may be a valid MPEG program stream but still lack DVD menus and navigation. To create a disc, import the converted video into a DVD-authoring application and generate the complete VIDEO_TS structure.
  • DVD-Video commonly uses MPEG-2 video and AC-3 audio; selecting those codecs improves compatibility with physical DVD players.
