What the RMVB format is

RMVB means RealMedia Variable Bitrate. It is a RealNetworks container designed to store RealVideo and usually RealAudio with variable video bitrate allocation, making older internet video files smaller than constant-bitrate alternatives.

RealPlayer and older RealNetworks encoding tools commonly created RMVB files. You may encounter them in Asian video archives, older downloads, and collections produced before H.264-based formats became widespread. Compatibility is limited in current video editors, televisions, and DVD authoring applications, so conversion may be required before editing or disc creation.

What the VOB format is

VOB, or Video Object, is the main media container used in a DVD-Video VIDEO_TS folder. It normally contains MPEG-2 video, MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 audio, subtitles, navigation data, and DVD presentation information.

VOB is appropriate for DVD-Video authoring and playback on compatible DVD players, but it is not a general-purpose replacement for MP4. A standalone VOB may play in software, while a physical DVD also needs authoring-generated .IFO and .BUP files and the correct folder structure.

How to convert RMVB to VOB

Using the online converter

You can convert the file on 101convert.com for free without installing software. Upload the RMVB file, select VOB as the output format, start the conversion, and download the resulting file. This produces a converted media file; use DVD authoring software afterward if you need a playable disc with menus and navigation.

Using FFmpeg on a computer

FFmpeg can decode many RMVB files and encode DVD-compatible MPEG-2 video. A current build is required because support depends on the RealVideo and RealAudio decoders included in that build.

1. Place the source file in the FFmpeg working folder and check its properties with ffprobe input.rmvb.
2. For an NTSC DVD, run ffmpeg -i input.rmvb -target ntsc-dvd -aspect 4:3 output.vob. Use -aspect 16:9 when the source is widescreen.
3. For a PAL DVD, use ffmpeg -i input.rmvb -target pal-dvd -aspect 4:3 output.vob instead.
4. Open the resulting file in a DVD authoring application if you need a complete disc. DVDStyler can create menus and DVD folders; import the converted video, choose the television standard, and select File → Burn DVD after authoring.

If FFmpeg reports an unsupported codec or produces no audio, decode the RMVB with a current desktop media converter that includes RealMedia support, then author the resulting MPEG-2 video in DVDStyler. Do not simply rename the extension: changing input.rmvb to input.vob does not change the container or codecs.

Quality and compatibility limitations

RMVB is normally already lossy, and DVD output requires another lossy MPEG-2 encoding step. VOB cannot restore detail removed during the original RMVB encoding; use the highest-quality source available.

DVD-Video restricts video to standard-definition frame sizes such as 720×480 for NTSC and 720×576 for PAL, with MPEG-2-compatible frame rates and DVD-compliant audio. A high-definition or unusual-aspect-ratio RMVB will therefore be resized or padded. Choose the correct television standard and aspect ratio to avoid motion problems, stretching, or cropped edges.

Large DVD titles are commonly split into multiple VOB files, often near 1 GB. DVD authoring software performs this split and creates the required VIDEO_TS.IFO and VIDEO_TS.BUP files; a single converted VOB is not by itself a complete DVD.
