What the RMVB format is

RMVB means RealMedia Variable Bitrate. It is a RealNetworks container usually holding RealVideo and RealAudio streams, with bitrate allocated dynamically to reduce file size while preserving more detail in complex scenes.

RMVB files were common in online video distribution and personal archives during the 2000s. RealNetworks RealPlayer created and played them, and older versions of VLC, MPlayer, and FFmpeg can often decode them. Modern televisions, browsers, mobile devices, and editing applications may lack native RMVB support.

For a smaller, lower-compatibility MPEG-1 file, use -c:v mpeg1video instead of -c:v mpeg2video. If FFmpeg reports an unsupported input or codec, the build may lack the required RealMedia decoder; use a current full build or a desktop converter that includes FFmpeg decoding.
