Convert VPJ to MPEG

A DVD authoring tool, older media player, or hardware device may require MPEG instead of a VideoPad project. Exporting the project to an MPEG file also produces a shareable video that can be played without VideoPad.

What the VPJ format is

.vpj is the project format used by NCH Software VideoPad Video Editor. It stores the timeline, cuts, transitions, effects, titles, audio settings, and references to imported video and audio files; it is not a finished video stream.

VideoPad users can open and edit VPJ files, but ordinary media players and FFmpeg cannot normally decode them as video. Keep every referenced source file available, because moving or renaming those files can cause missing-media errors during export.

What the MPEG format is

MPEG is a family of video standards. For file conversion, it commonly means MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 video in an .mpg or .mpeg file. MPEG-2 remains common in DVD production, broadcast workflows, older televisions, and legacy playback hardware.

MPEG files generally work with more players and devices than VPJ projects, but MPEG-2 usually produces larger files than H.264 video in an MP4 container at similar visual quality. Check whether the destination requires MPEG-1 or MPEG-2, a particular frame size and frame rate, an MPEG program stream, or DVD-compliant video and audio settings.

How to convert a VPJ project to MPEG

1. Install VideoPad Video Editor and open the project with File → Open Project.
2. Review the timeline and resolve any missing source-media warnings. The project cannot render correctly without the referenced video, images, and audio.
3. Choose Export Video or File → Export Video.
4. Select a video-file export rather than a disc-authoring operation. Choose MPEG or MPEG-2 if VideoPad presents that option, then set an output filename ending in .mpg.
5. Use the source frame size and frame rate unless the receiving device specifies other values. For DVD output, select the correct NTSC or PAL preset rather than entering arbitrary settings.
6. Start the export and test the resulting .mpg file in VLC or another MPEG-compatible player before copying it to the target device or authoring a disc.

VideoPad is the required first tool because it can interpret the VPJ timeline and render its edits, transitions, and effects. Online services such as CloudConvert and Zamzar may convert a rendered video, but they generally cannot interpret a VideoPad project and its linked media. Export the VPJ to MP4 or another supported video file first, then upload that rendered file only if a second online conversion is needed.

Alternative conversion with FFmpeg

If VideoPad does not provide the required MPEG profile, export a high-quality intermediate file and encode it with FFmpeg:

ffmpeg -i rendered.mp4 -c:v mpeg2video -q:v 3 -c:a mp2 -b:a 192k output.mpg

This creates an MPEG-2 video with MP2 audio in an MPEG program stream. Change the video settings or use a PAL/NTSC DVD preset when the destination has strict requirements; the command alone does not guarantee DVD compliance. A dedicated DVD-authoring encoder may also be required for the exact permitted resolution, frame rate, bitrate, aspect ratio, audio format, and navigation structure.

Quality and compatibility limits

VPJ-to-MPEG conversion is a render, not a container-only change. VideoPad decodes the original media and recompresses the timeline, so quality depends on the source files, MPEG profile, bitrate, frame size, frame-rate conversion, and any earlier compression. Exporting an already compressed MP4 to MPEG can reduce quality further; retain the original source media or use a high-quality intermediate when possible.
