VIV files usually contain older VivoActive web video and may not open in current editing software. Converting them to MPEG produces a more widely recognized video file for legacy players, discs, and basic editing applications.

What the VIV format is

VIV is the video file extension associated with VivoActive, an early streaming-video system developed by Vivo Software and later associated with RealNetworks. It was used for low-bandwidth internet video in the 1990s and early 2000s, and files commonly came from websites, software archives, or old media collections.

VIV video uses proprietary Vivo codecs such as Vivo/ H.263-based variants. Modern applications may recognize the extension but still lack a decoder, so renaming video.viv to video.mpg does not convert the contents.

What the MPEG format is

MPEG is a family of ISO/IEC video standards. Files with .mpg or .mpeg commonly contain MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 video, often with MPEG Layer II audio.

MPEG-1 is supported by many older computers, media players, and Video CD software. MPEG-2 generally provides better quality at higher bitrates and is used by DVD and broadcast workflows. MPEG is less space-efficient than modern H.264 or H.265 video, but it can be a better compatibility target for legacy hardware.

How to convert VIV to MPEG

Online conversion: Use the converter on 101convert.com to convert the file without installing software. Upload the VIV file, select MPEG or MPG as the output format, start the conversion, and download the resulting file. Keep the original VIV file because an unsuccessful conversion cannot be reversed from the output.

FFmpeg on a desktop: FFmpeg includes decoders for many Vivo files, although support depends on the installed build.

  1. Install a current FFmpeg build and place input.viv in an accessible folder.
  2. Check whether FFmpeg can read the source with ffprobe input.viv or ffmpeg -i input.viv.
  3. For a broadly compatible MPEG-1 file, run ffmpeg -i input.viv -c:v mpeg1video -b:v 1500k -c:a mp2 -b:a 192k output.mpg.
  4. If the source has no audio, use ffmpeg -i input.viv -c:v mpeg1video -b:v 1500k -an output.mpg.

To create MPEG-2 instead, replace -c:v mpeg1video with -c:v mpeg2video; MPEG-2 normally requires a higher video bitrate. If FFmpeg reports an unknown input format or codec, open the VIV in VLC first. When VLC can play it, use Media → Convert/Save, add the file, choose Convert, select a profile containing MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 video, specify an .mpg destination, and start the process.

Quality and compatibility limitations

Conversion cannot restore detail removed by the original Vivo compression. The output may look blocky or soft, particularly when the VIV source has a small frame size or low bitrate.

Use MPEG-1 when playback compatibility matters most and MPEG-2 when the destination specifically expects DVD-style video. Preserve the source frame rate when possible; changing it can introduce judder. If the encoder rejects an odd frame width or height, scale the video to even dimensions before encoding. VIV files may also contain unsupported or damaged audio, in which case video-only output with -an is the practical fallback.
