Free online VIV to WEBM converter

Web browsers, video editors, and modern playback devices commonly accept WEBM but may not recognize older VIV files. Converting the video makes it easier to play, edit, embed, or share without the original VIV software.

What the VIV format is

VIV is an older video-file extension associated mainly with VivoActive or Vivo video software and codecs. It is uncommon today, and the extension does not guarantee one exact codec or container specification; files from different sources may require different decoders. You may encounter VIV files in old media archives, legacy downloads, or recordings made with discontinued software.

Identify the actual streams before converting with ffprobe input.viv. If FFmpeg reports a video stream and lists a supported VIV/Vivo demuxer, it can usually decode the file directly. A file that FFmpeg, VLC, and the original Vivo application cannot open may be damaged, DRM-protected, or encoded with a proprietary variant.

What the WEBM format is

WEBM is an open media container designed for web playback. It normally contains VP8, VP9, or AV1 video with Vorbis or Opus audio. WebM is well suited to HTML5 video, browser delivery, lightweight sharing, and applications that specifically request a web-optimized file.

VP9 generally provides better compression than VP8 at similar quality, while Opus is the usual audio choice. WEBM is not universally accepted by older televisions, editing applications, or hardware players, so MP4 may be a better target when broad device compatibility matters.

How to convert VIV to WEBM

FFmpeg is the most practical desktop option because it can inspect the source and explicitly select WebM-compatible codecs.

1. Install a current FFmpeg build from the official FFmpeg project or your operating system's package manager.
2. Place input.viv in a convenient folder and check it with ffprobe input.viv.
3. Convert the video and audio with:
   ffmpeg -i input.viv -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a? -c:v libvpx-vp9 -crf 32 -b:v 0 -c:a libopus -b:a 96k output.webm
4. Test output.webm in a current browser or media player. If the source has no audio stream, use -an instead of -map 0:a? and the audio options.

For faster encoding with larger files, replace libvpx-vp9 with libvpx and use -crf 10 through -crf 20; lower CRF values preserve more quality. If FFmpeg cannot decode the file, try opening it in VLC or the original Vivo application and use Media → Convert/Save, selecting a WebM-compatible VP8 or VP9 profile if available.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

VIV sources are often low-resolution or heavily compressed, so converting them to VP9 cannot restore missing detail. The -crf 32 setting is a reasonable size-oriented starting point; use roughly -crf 24 to -crf 28 for better visual quality and a larger file.

Some VIV files contain unusual frame rates, variable audio timing, or no audio at all. Check the converted file's duration and synchronization, and add -vsync cfr only if a target application rejects variable frame timing. If the source is interlaced, deinterlace it with a filter such as -vf bwdif before encoding.
