What the VIV format is

VIV is an ambiguous file extension. The best-known video use is the legacy VivoActive format created by Vivo Software and encountered in old video archives, downloaded clips, and files produced with VivoActive Player or Producer. VIV files may contain proprietary video and audio encoding, so the extension alone does not identify the exact codec or container.

Check an unfamiliar file before converting it with ffprobe input.viv or a media-information utility. If the file is not a Vivo video, FFmpeg may reject it or report a different container type.

What the TS format is

TS, usually MPEG transport stream, is a packetized container designed for continuous delivery. Digital television, IPTV systems, Blu-ray-related workflows, broadcast equipment, and some hardware players commonly use it.

TS tolerates transmission errors better than many file-oriented containers and can carry video, audio, subtitles, and metadata. It is not automatically a quality improvement: converting a VIV file to TS normally requires decoding the original stream and either copying or re-encoding its contents.

How to actually convert VIV to TS

Using FFmpeg

Install a current FFmpeg build, place the VIV file in an accessible folder, and inspect it first:

ffprobe -hide_banner input.viv

For a broadly compatible TS containing H.264 video and AAC audio, run:

ffmpeg -i input.viv -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a? -c:v libx264 -preset medium -crf 20 -c:a aac -b:a 192k -f mpegts output.ts

-map 0:a? keeps the command working when the VIV file has no audio. Lower -crf values increase quality and file size; a value around 18–23 is typical for H.264.

If FFmpeg reports that the VIV streams are already compatible with the required TS workflow, try stream copying to avoid generation loss:

ffmpeg -i input.viv -map 0 -c copy -f mpegts output.ts

Stream copying only works when the input codecs and timestamps are accepted by the target player or broadcast system. Re-encoding is usually safer for proprietary Vivo codecs.

Using the online converter

On 101convert.com, select the VIV-to-TS conversion, upload the file, start the conversion, and download the resulting .ts file. This option requires no installed software; retain the original VIV file until you have tested the output.

Quality and compatibility limitations

Legacy VIV decoding is the main limitation. Some files depend on obsolete codecs that current FFmpeg builds cannot decode; in that case, open the file with the original Vivo software or another application that can export it to an intermediate format, then convert that exported file to TS.

Use ffprobe output.ts to verify the video codec, audio codec, duration, and stream count. A TS file may contain several programs or streams, and some players display only the first one; -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a? deliberately selects the first video and optional first audio stream.

Do not rename .viv to .ts; changing the extension does not change the container or encoding. Re-encoding can also introduce quality loss, while stream copying preserves the encoded data but may produce a TS file that a particular device cannot decode.
