Legacy VivoActive recordings may need conversion when a DVD-authoring, broadcast, or video-editing application accepts MPEG-2 elementary streams but cannot read VIV files. M2V carries video only, so any audio in the source must be exported separately.

What the VIV format is

VIV is the video-file extension associated primarily with VivoActive, an older proprietary streaming and compressed-video system from Vivo Software. You may encounter it in archived website downloads, legacy multimedia collections, or recordings created with VivoActive software from the late 1990s and early 2000s.

Modern players and converters do not consistently support VIV because the format and its codecs are obsolete. Confirm that the file is actually a VivoActive video rather than relying only on its extension; ffprobe input.viv or a media player that displays codec information can identify the streams.

What the M2V format is

M2V is an MPEG-2 elementary video stream. It contains compressed video without a container and normally without audio, subtitles, chapters, or other metadata. DVD-authoring software, some broadcast workflows, and older editing systems use M2V because MPEG-2 decoding is widely supported in those environments.

Choose M2V when the receiving application specifically requests an MPEG-2 video stream. Do not choose it as a general-purpose replacement for a complete video file: an M2V file cannot preserve the source soundtrack by itself, and MPEG-2 re-encoding usually produces a larger file than modern H.264 or H.265 output at comparable visual quality.

How to convert VIV to M2V

Using FFmpeg

FFmpeg is the most practical desktop option when its installed build can decode the particular VIV variant.

  1. Install a current FFmpeg build and place input.viv in a working folder.
  2. Check whether FFmpeg recognizes the source with ffprobe input.viv. Look for a detected video stream and its frame size and frame rate.
  3. Convert the first video stream and discard audio with ffmpeg -i input.viv -map 0:v:0 -c:v mpeg2video -q:v 2 -an -f mpeg2video output.m2v.
  4. Play or inspect output.m2v in the software that will use it. Some players need an accompanying audio file or a separate MPEG-2 container to preview an elementary stream.

The command re-encodes the video at high quality using FFmpeg's MPEG-2 encoder. For a smaller file, replace -q:v 2 with a target bitrate such as -b:v 5000k; use the bitrate, frame size, frame rate, and GOP limits required by the final DVD or broadcast specification.

Using the built-in online converter

You can convert the file on 101convert.com for free without installing software: select the Video converter, upload the VIV file, choose M2V as the output, start the conversion, and download the generated file. The service must be able to decode the specific VivoActive variant; an unsupported or damaged VIV file will require a desktop decoder or an older application that can play and export it.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

Conversion from VIV to M2V is normally a lossy decode-and-re-encode process. It cannot restore detail already removed by the VIV codec, and repeated conversions can introduce blocking, ringing, or motion artifacts. Keep the original VIV file as the archival source.

M2V has no audio track. If FFmpeg detects source audio, export it separately, for example with ffmpeg -i input.viv -map 0:a:0 -c:a pcm_s16le audio.wav, then import the M2V and audio together in the authoring or editing application. DVD software may require a specific MPEG-2 profile, PAL or NTSC dimensions, frame rate, bitrate, and audio format; a technically valid M2V can still be rejected if those project settings do not match.
