Free online VIV to M4A converter

Some older VivoActive video files use the .viv extension, while phones, music apps, and editors commonly expect audio in .m4a. Converting requires extracting the audio stream from the VIV file and encoding it as AAC or another codec supported inside an M4A container.

What the VIV format is

VIV is most commonly associated with VivoActive video, an older proprietary format used for streamed or downloaded multimedia. You may encounter it in archived websites, legacy media collections, or files created with Vivo Software and its VivoActive playback tools.

The extension is not a universal standard, so a file named .viv may use a different application-specific format. Check the file’s source before converting it; renaming .viv to .m4a does not change its contents.

What the M4A format is

M4A is an audio-only MPEG-4 container. It commonly stores AAC audio, which provides smaller files than uncompressed PCM at comparable listening quality, and it is supported by smartphones, media players, music libraries, and many editing applications.

Use M4A when the destination application accepts AAC audio or when you need an audio file rather than the original VIV video. M4A does not preserve video, subtitles, or video-specific metadata.

FFmpeg can read many VivoActive files and extract their audio. First inspect the streams:

The -vn option discards video, -c:a aac encodes AAC audio, and -b:a 192k sets the audio bitrate. For spoken content, 128k may be sufficient; for music, 192k or 256k generally retains more detail.

Quality and compatibility limitations

Conversion cannot restore quality already lost in the VIV source. If the source audio is low-bitrate or heavily compressed, increasing the M4A bitrate only produces a larger file.

A VIV file may contain video only, an unsupported codec, or no audio stream. FFmpeg will report this during probing or conversion; an audio-only M4A cannot be created unless a readable audio stream exists.

If FFmpeg reports that the input format is unknown, verify that the extension is correct and obtain the original file from the program that created it. Avoid forcing a different extension, because that changes only the filename and not the file format.
