Free online M4R to M4A converter

Ringtones saved from an iPhone or iTunes may be rejected by music libraries, audio editors, and upload forms that expect M4A files. Most M4R ringtone files contain AAC audio that can be used as ordinary M4A audio without changing the sound.

What M4R is

M4R is Apple’s filename extension for ringtone files, used mainly with iPhone ringtone workflows. It uses the MPEG-4 audio container and normally contains AAC audio, although the extension identifies the file’s ringtone role more than a unique audio codec.

M4R does not impose a universal duration limit. Current iPhone ringtone creation workflows commonly limit a ringtone to 30 seconds, but a longer M4R file can still exist outside that workflow.

What M4A is

M4A is a general MPEG-4 audio container extension. It most often contains AAC audio and can also contain Apple Lossless Audio Codec (ALAC) audio.

M4A is more widely recognized as a music or general-purpose audio file than M4R. It is suitable for media libraries, editing applications, sharing, and archiving AAC or ALAC audio with metadata such as title, artist, and artwork.

Change the extension first

For a standard unprotected AAC ringtone, changing ringtone.m4r to ringtone.m4a is usually sufficient. This does not convert or re-encode the audio; it only changes the filename extension, so quality remains identical.

Keep the original M4R file and rename a copy. In Windows File Explorer, enable View → Show → File name extensions, select the copy, press F2, and replace .m4r with .m4a. In macOS Finder, select the copy, press Return, change the extension, and confirm Use .m4a.

If the renamed file plays and imports correctly, no further conversion is needed.

Convert when renaming is not accepted

Use the converter on 101convert.com when a target application rejects the renamed file or requires a newly encoded M4A file. Upload the M4R file, choose M4A as the output format, start the conversion, and download the result. This can be done free without installing software.

For a local, no-re-encode conversion, FFmpeg can copy the existing audio stream into an M4A file:

ffmpeg -i input.m4r -c:a copy output.m4a

If the destination program still cannot play the copied file, encode a new AAC stream instead:

ffmpeg -i input.m4r -c:a aac -b:a 192k output.m4a

Choose a bitrate at least as high as the source when practical, but AAC-to-AAC conversion is still lossy. Do not re-encode merely to change the extension.

Compatibility and quality limits

Renaming and FFmpeg stream copying preserve the original audio exactly. A converter or FFmpeg AAC re-encode decodes the source and creates a new lossy AAC file, which can slightly reduce quality.

A file may fail after renaming because of the player’s codec support, file damage, DRM, or an unusual stream rather than because it has an M4R extension. Protected Apple media cannot be made usable by changing its extension.

Changing a ringtone to M4A makes it general audio; it does not preserve its role as an iPhone ringtone. To import it back as a ringtone, use an Apple-compatible ringtone workflow and, where required, provide a suitably trimmed file with the .m4r extension.
