M4R is an iPhone ringtone file format based on the MPEG-4 audio container, usually containing AAC audio. It is most commonly used by Apple devices for custom ringtones and alert tones. In practice, an M4R file is often just a short audio clip with a different extension and, sometimes, ringtone-specific metadata.

People typically create M4R files from songs, sound effects, or voice clips when they want a ringtone that works on iPhone or iPad. Because it is tied to Apple’s ringtone workflow, M4R is mainly used for personal ringtone customization rather than general audio distribution.

Target format: APE

APE usually refers to Monkey’s Audio, a lossless audio format designed to compress audio without removing any data. Its main advantage is that it preserves the original sound exactly while often reducing file size more efficiently than uncompressed WAV. APE is used by audio collectors, archivists, and users who want bit-perfect preservation of music or recordings.

Compared with M4R, APE is not a ringtone format and is much less common on phones and portable devices. Its strength is archival quality, not compatibility with Apple ringtone systems.

How to perform the conversion

The most practical way to convert M4R to APE is with a desktop audio converter such as FFmpeg or a dedicated audio editor/converter that supports both formats. Since M4R is typically AAC-compressed and APE is lossless, the conversion is technically possible, but it will not restore audio quality beyond what is already in the M4R source.

Using FFmpeg is the most direct method if your build includes APE support:

1. Install FFmpeg on your computer.
2. Open a terminal or command prompt in the folder containing the M4R file.
3. Run a command such as ffmpeg -i input.m4r output.ape.
4. Check the resulting file in an audio player that supports Monkey’s Audio.

If FFmpeg cannot write APE on your system, use a converter such as Foobar2000 with the Monkey’s Audio encoder installed, or another audio tool that can export to APE. In many programs the workflow is similar: File → Open the M4R file, then File → Convert or Export, and choose APE/Monkey’s Audio as the output format.

Notes on quality and compatibility

Quality is the main limitation in this conversion: because M4R is usually already compressed with AAC, converting it to APE does not make it lossless. The APE file will simply store the already-compressed audio in a lossless container, which may increase file size without improving fidelity.

Compatibility is another important point. APE support is limited compared with MP3, AAC, or WAV, so the converted file may not play in many phones, browsers, or standard media apps. If your goal is broad playback compatibility, APE is usually not the best target format. If your goal is archival storage or working with Monkey’s Audio specifically, it can be appropriate.

Also note that some M4R files are protected by Apple’s ecosystem rules or may have short duration limits typical of ringtones. Those restrictions do not usually prevent conversion, but they can affect how the source file behaves before conversion.
