Free online M4R to AIFF converter

Some Mac audio applications, samplers, DAWs, and archival workflows require AIFF rather than an iPhone ringtone file. Converting an M4R creates an AIFF that can be edited or imported there, but it cannot restore quality removed by AAC compression.

What the M4R format is

.m4r is an Apple ringtone extension based on the MPEG-4 container. Most M4R files contain lossy AAC audio and are short clips prepared for use as iPhone ringtones. Ringtone editors and older iTunes-based workflows can also create them; the extension does not identify one guaranteed codec, bitrate, or encoding profile.

Renaming .m4r to .m4a may let some software open an unprotected file, because both commonly use an MPEG-4 container, but renaming does not convert the audio or create AIFF.

What the AIFF format is

AIFF, or Audio Interchange File Format, is an Apple-developed audio container commonly used for uncompressed PCM. Professional audio editors, DAWs, samplers, media players, and macOS software generally support it. Standard AIFF settings include 44.1 or 48 kHz sample rates and 16- or 24-bit samples.

Uncompressed PCM is easier to edit and avoids another lossy compression stage. It also requires substantially more storage than AAC: the resulting file is typically several times larger than the M4R. AIFF can contain metadata, but cover art, ringtone-specific data, and other source metadata may not survive conversion.

Convert M4R online

1. Open the converter on 101convert.com.
2. Upload the unprotected .m4r file.
3. Select AIFF as the output format and start the conversion.
4. Download the resulting .aiff file and verify its duration and audio properties in the destination application.

This option requires no software installation. Do not upload files containing material you are not authorized to process, and avoid uploading confidential audio unless the service’s handling policies meet your requirements.

Convert M4R with FFmpeg

FFmpeg is suitable for local or batch conversion and provides explicit control over the output format. Install FFmpeg, open Terminal on macOS or a Command Prompt or PowerShell window on Windows, then run:

ffmpeg -i input.m4r -c:a pcm_s16be output.aiff

This decodes the source and writes 16-bit big-endian PCM, a standard and broadly compatible AIFF encoding. For 24-bit output at a specific sample rate and stereo channel count, use:

ffmpeg -i input.m4r -ar 48000 -ac 2 -c:a pcm_s24be output.aiff

Use the source sample rate and channel count unless the receiving application specifies different values. On macOS or Linux, all M4R files in the current folder can be converted with:

Convert M4R with Audacity

1. Open Audacity and choose File → Import → Audio, then select the M4R file.
2. Set the project sample rate if the destination requires a rate different from the source.
3. Choose File → Export Audio.
4. Select AIFF, choose the required bit depth, specify a filename ending in .aiff, and export.

If Audacity cannot import the file, install its FFmpeg import support or decode the M4R with FFmpeg before importing the resulting audio.

Quality and compatibility limits

Because most M4R files contain lossy AAC, AIFF conversion preserves the decoded result but not information discarded during AAC encoding. Choosing 24-bit AIFF or a higher sample rate does not recover that information; it only changes the output representation and may increase file size. Use 16-bit AIFF for general compatibility and 24-bit AIFF when the file will undergo further production processing.

Resampling can be necessary for a particular sampler or DAW, but it does not improve fidelity. Check the exported file’s duration, sample rate, bit depth, and channel count in the target software. Files with DRM protection, corruption, or an unsupported codec may not be readable by FFmpeg, Audacity, or the online converter; use an unprotected source that you are authorized to convert.
