VOC is an older audio file format originally associated with Creative Labs Sound Blaster hardware and early DOS-era software. It was commonly used for short sound effects, voice clips, and simple game audio. VOC files may contain 8-bit or 16-bit PCM audio, silence blocks, and other legacy chunk types, which makes them useful for preserving vintage audio assets but less convenient for modern playback.

M4A is an audio container commonly used for AAC or ALAC audio. It is widely supported by modern devices, media players, and editing software. Compared with VOC, M4A offers much better compatibility, smaller file sizes at similar quality when using AAC, and cleaner integration with current music libraries and mobile devices.

How to perform the conversion

The most reliable way to convert VOC to M4A is with FFmpeg, because it can decode many legacy audio formats and encode directly to M4A.

1. Install FFmpeg on your computer.
2. Open a terminal or command prompt in the folder containing the VOC file.
3. Run a command such as ffmpeg -i input.voc -c:a aac -b:a 192k output.m4a.
4. If you want a lossless M4A using Apple Lossless, use ffmpeg -i input.voc -c:a alac output.m4a.
5. Play the resulting output.m4a in a modern audio player to confirm the conversion.

If you prefer a graphical workflow, Audacity can often open legacy audio through FFmpeg support, after which you can use File → Export → Export as M4A or export to a compatible intermediate format and then encode to M4A with another tool. For batch conversion or automation, FFmpeg is usually the best choice.

Notes on quality and compatibility

VOC files are often low sample rate and low bit depth, so converting them to M4A does not improve the original audio quality; it only changes the container and codec. If the source is noisy, clipped, or mono, those characteristics will remain. When using AAC, choose a bitrate that matches the source quality; very high bitrates will not restore missing detail. Some VOC files contain unusual legacy blocks or malformed headers, so a few files may require a different decoder or may not convert perfectly. If the goal is archival preservation, keep the original VOC file as well as the converted M4A.
