Free online AC3 to M4A converter

A phone, browser, or editing application may reject an AC3 recording even when it can play other audio formats. Converting it to M4A with AAC audio usually improves playback compatibility, reduces size, and creates a file that is easier to share or edit.

What the AC3 format is

AC3, also called Dolby Digital, is a lossy audio codec used mainly for movie and television sound. DVDs, Blu-ray discs, digital television broadcasts, video containers, disc-ripping software, broadcast recorders, HandBrake, and FFmpeg-based applications commonly contain or create AC3 streams.

You may find an .ac3 file after extracting audio from a DVD or demultiplexing a video file. AC3 commonly carries 5.1-channel surround sound, but it also supports stereo and other channel layouts. Its comparatively limited support in phones, browsers, music players, and editing software makes it less suitable for general-purpose playback.

What the M4A format is

M4A is an audio-only MPEG-4 container, usually containing AAC audio and sometimes Apple Lossless Audio Codec (ALAC). AAC M4A files are substantially smaller than uncompressed audio at comparable listening quality and are supported by many Apple and Android devices, desktop media players, and editing applications.

M4A is a container rather than a single codec, so the extension alone does not guarantee compatibility. Choose AAC inside M4A when the destination expects AAC, broad device support, or a smaller file; use ALAC when lossless preservation is required. Converting AC3 to ALAC does not recover detail already removed by the lossy AC3 encoding.

How to convert the file with FFmpeg

FFmpeg is the most flexible desktop option for individual or batch conversions. After installing FFmpeg, open a terminal in the folder containing the source file and run:

ffmpeg -i input.ac3 -map 0:a:0 -c:a aac -b:a 192k output.m4a

Replace the filenames as needed. This decodes the AC3 stream and re-encodes it as AAC at 192 kb/s. Use 128–160 kb/s for speech or lower-size files, 192 kb/s for ordinary audio, and 256 kb/s or higher for demanding stereo material. Bitrate recommendations depend on the source and do not restore information lost during the original AC3 encoding.

To create a stereo file for devices that do not support multichannel AAC, add -ac 2:

ffmpeg -i input.ac3 -map 0:a:0 -c:a aac -b:a 160k -ac 2 output.m4a

Omit -ac 2 to retain the source channel layout, provided the AAC encoder and destination support it. If the AC3 file contains multiple audio streams, change -map 0:a:0 to select the required stream, such as -map 0:a:1. To copy available metadata, add -map_metadata 0:

ffmpeg -i input.ac3 -map 0:a:0 -c:a aac -b:a 192k -map_metadata 0 output.m4a

Quality and compatibility limits

AC3-to-AAC conversion is a lossy-to-lossy transcode: the AC3 decoder reconstructs the audio and the AAC encoder compresses it again. Use the highest-quality original source available, avoid repeated conversions, and compare the output if preserving surround sound matters.

Multichannel AAC playback is less consistent than stereo playback. Use -ac 2 when reliable stereo output is more important than retaining 5.1 channels. Do not use -c:a copy for a normal conversion: it copies the AC3 codec without converting it, and many M4A players do not support AC3 audio inside an MPEG-4 container.
